Chapter 3 - the cellar beneath the east wing

Night fell over the Whitmore estate, wrapping the limestone mansion in a cool, misty rain.

Jonathan walked down the grand stone staircase leading to the subterranean level of the east wing, carrying a heavy tactical flashlight. Beside him walked Rosa, having insisted on coming along after Camila was put to bed in the guest quarters.

"He told me three months ago that if I ever complained to you," Rosa whispered, her voice echoing off the damp stone walls, "he would have my immigration sponsorship revoked and throw us onto the street."

"Harrison has no authority in this house anymore, Rosa," Jonathan said, his voice deep and solid. "You and Camila are safe here."

They reached the end of the long stone corridor. Set into the foundation wall was a heavy iron door marked with a weathered brass plate: Vault 04.

Jonathan inserted the small brass key into the lock. The heavy iron bolts clicked open with a loud, metallic groan.

Jonathan pushed the heavy door open, revealing a dusty, air-conditioned archive room filled with floor-to-ceiling metal shelving. Rows of black leather binders sat neatly organized under the bare overhead light.

Jonathan pulled down the binder labeled Sterling Holdings — 2021-2026.

He opened the ledger under his flashlight beam. Page after page detailed systematic wire transfers totaling over twelve million dollars—diverted not just from staff payroll, but from Jonathan's private charitable foundations and local estate tax reserves.

Every single transfer was co-signed by two signatures: Harrison Blake, and a secondary signature stamped in dark red ink—Victor Sterling.

Jonathan’s jaw set like iron. Victor Sterling was his father's former business partner—a man who had been driven out of the corporate board three years ago after a failed hostile takeover attempt.

"Harrison wasn't just stealing salary money, Rosa," Jonathan murmured, his dark eyes burning with intensity. "He’s been feeding internal financial data to Sterling to build a case for insolvency against my estate."

Suddenly, a loud metallic screech echoed through the corridor.

The heavy iron door of Vault 04 slammed shut with violent force! A sharp electronic click followed as the external deadbolt engaged from the outside, plunging the room into pitch-black darkness.
