Chapter 13 - The Mob Boss Problem

My name became an issue.
Of course.
A tabloid ran:
BOSTON MOB HEIR SHELTERS COP’S EX-WIFE.
Photograph of my house.
Old photograph of Derek in uniform.
No Harper face initially.
Then another outlet published her name.
We asked for privacy.
Not all complied.
Derek’s police union representative complained publicly that:
“outside criminal influence”
should not determine an officer’s discipline.
Fair principle.
Wrong implication.
Internal Affairs had independent logs.
Still, my involvement complicated everything.
Federal agents who had watched Ashford businesses for years contacted my lawyer.
Not about Harper.
About whether I had threatened Derek.
I disclosed the private investigators.
No other action.
One investigator had photographed Derek meeting a man outside a bar during the two-hour assignment.
I refused to use it because it was irrelevant.
Good.
My father would have kept it:
in case.
That was how families like mine accumulated leverage until every relationship became hostage to a drawer.
I deleted nothing that was evidence.
The licensed agency retained records according to law.
But I did not weaponize unrelated personal information.
Julia Chen said:
“Congratulations on reaching the ethical standard of a normal person.”
I paid her too much.
Harper saw the tabloid.
She came to me.
“This is ruining you.”
“No.”
“Your businesses?”
“Fine.”
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I can leave.”
“Do you want to?”
She looked toward the window.
“No.”
“Then don’t leave because you think my reputation needs protection.”
Harper laughed once.
“Your reputation?”
“Exactly.”
The Ashford name had survived indictments, investigations, and my grandfather punching a state legislator in 1979.
A tabloid could not finish us.
Harper’s safety mattered more.
Still, I began stepping back from her legal process physically.
No courthouse unless requested.
No meetings unless relevant.
No sitting beside her like ownership.
Protection sometimes means becoming less visible.
May you like
That was new for me.
