Chapter 19 - Charges

Derek remained suspended for months.

Internal discipline and criminal investigation proceeded separately.

The district attorney eventually approved charges.

Not everything Harper alleged became a charge.

Some older incidents lacked sufficient corroboration.

Some fell into evidentiary difficulties.

The strongest counts involved:

A documented assault on Harper within the limitation period.

Stalking based on repeated unwanted following/contact and database-assisted location behavior.

Witness intimidation tied to threats concerning reports and Noah.

Unauthorized access/computer misuse handled through a combination of criminal and administrative theories under applicable law.

No attempted murder.

No kidnapping.

No fabricated massive conspiracy.

His attorney fought aggressively.

Harper’s threatening voicemail.

My private investigators.

Her decision to live in an Ashford property.

My reputation.

The absence of severe medical injuries.

All used.

The prosecution had answers.

Not perfect ones.

Cases are not moral essays.

Derek rejected the first plea.

Then body-camera and database evidence survived suppression challenges.

The coffee-shop witness remained cooperative.

Noah’s statements were handled carefully; prosecutors did not over-rely on him.

Harper testified at a pretrial hearing.

Derek sat across the room.

Uniform gone.

Suit.

For the first time she saw him without institutional costume.

She still shook.

Aisha whispered:

“Feet.”

Harper pressed both shoes into the floor.

Grounding.

Then testified.

Not perfectly.

She forgot a date.

Corrected another.

Cried once.

Derek’s attorney asked:

“You threatened to kill my client, correct?”

“Yes.”

“Because you were angry?”

“Yes.”

“And you want this court to believe you were the frightened one?”

Harper answered:

“Both can be true.”

There.

No saint required.

The case kept moving.
