Chapter 20 - The Plea

Fourteen months after the night in my bathroom, Derek accepted a plea.

Not because he confessed emotionally.

Because evidence and professional consequences accumulated.

He pleaded guilty to a felony stalking offense and a witness-intimidation count.

A misdemeanor domestic assault count was included.

Some computer-access allegations were resolved through dismissal as part of the plea while the underlying conduct remained central to departmental discipline.

Sentence:

Eighteen months in a house of correction, with a portion suspended under probation terms after required custodial time.

Three years probation.

No contact with Harper or Noah.

Firearm restrictions under applicable law.

Domestic violence intervention programming.

No use of law-enforcement databases outside authorized future employment—which became moot because he lost the job.

The police department terminated him after separate disciplinary process.

State certification authorities later suspended and ultimately revoked or allowed lapse of his certification based on the sustained misconduct and conviction.

No instant firing from one accusation.

Process.

Union representation.

Hearings.

Appeals.

Then consequence.

At sentencing Derek said:

“I made mistakes because my family was falling apart.”

Harper’s face tightened.

Judge:

“Ms. Queen and Noah were not possessions whose departure entitled you to police resources.”

Good.

Then:

“A badge increases responsibility. It does not expand private authority.”

Better.

Derek looked down.

No grand speech from me.

I was not in the courtroom.

Harper had not asked me to come.

That was progress.

Afterward she called Margaret.

Not me.

Also progress.

Margaret then called me because apparently she still believed information belonged in distribution chains.

“Plea entered.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Julia.”

“Of course.”

Then Margaret said:

“Harper is crying.”

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

“Then let her cry.”

May you like

I had learned something.
