Chapter 1 - the empty vial

The atmosphere inside Bellavita—Chicago’s most exclusive Italian dining establishment—was thick with suffocating tension. Underneath glittering crystal chandeliers, nervous waiters stepped carefully around white-cloth tables, while wealthy patrons kept their voices down to anxious whispers.
Sitting at a private corner booth was thirty-eight-year-old Dominic Moretti. As the feared and immensely powerful leader of the Chicago Mafia, Dominic commanded total authority wherever he walked. Tall, broad-shouldered, and impeccably tailored in a perfectly fitted black suit and open-collar dress shirt, dark tattoos snaked up his neck beneath his cuffs, while his sharp, handsome jaw was set in an expression of sheer exhaustion.
Resting in a plush velvet bassinet beside his table was his newborn son, Baby Leo Moretti. The tiny infant had dark hair, fair rosy skin, and wore a soft cream-colored outfit wrapped in a small white blanket. Leo had been screaming continuously for four straight hours, his small face flushed red, his tiny fists clenching in distress.
Standing around the table were four imposing, broad-shouldered bodyguards, hovering uselessly as they watched their boss struggle. Among them was Dante Russo—Dominic’s forty-year-old head of security. Large, disciplined, and lethally skilled, the tough bodyguard looked completely helpless in front of the screaming newborn.
Near the kitchen doors, forty-five-year-old Marco Bellini, the restaurant manager, wiped sweat from his forehead with a linen napkin, his hands trembling violently in his formal black suit.
Watching from across the dining room was twenty-eight-year-old Clara Vance. Dressed in her fitted black-and-white waitress uniform with a clean white apron, her long brown hair tied into a loose ponytail, Clara possessed soft, compassionate eyes that hid a painful past. Having studied pediatric nursing before losing her own infant son to a heart condition two years earlier, she recognized the baby’s cries instantly.
Clara noticed Baby Leo arching his small back and pulling his tiny legs tightly toward his stomach—a classic sign of severe abdominal distress.
She set her silver serving tray onto the station counter. Ignoring Marco’s frantic hand gestures and hushed warnings, Clara walked straight across the marble dining floor toward Dominic’s table.
The entire restaurant fell into dead, breathless silence as the young waitress stopped beside the Mafia Don's booth.
Leo continued to scream in pain. Clara looked directly into Dominic's fierce dark eyes.
Clara (firmly): “You’re hurting your own baby.”
Dominic froze, staring up at Clara in absolute disbelief. His bodyguards tensed, but Dominic held up a single broad hand, staying them. He looked down at his screaming son, then back at the calm, determined waitress.
"Show me," Dominic growled, his deep voice thick with exhaustion.
Clara leaned down, carefully lifting Baby Leo from the bassinet. She gently positioned the infant face-down along her left forearm in a comfortable colic hold, supporting his chin with her hand, and began slowly rubbing his back with her right palm.
Within sixty seconds, Leo’s frantic gasps slowed. His body relaxed against her arm, and he gradually stopped screaming altogether, letting out a soft sigh as he closed his eyes.
Dominic stood up immediately from his booth, shocked by the sudden, blissful silence that filled the restaurant. Dante Russo let out a quiet breath of relief.
As Clara held the quiet baby against her arm, her sharp nursing instincts took over. She gently checked Leo’s body, sliding her fingers around the edges of the cream outfit to ensure no pins or tight seams were pressing into his skin.
Her fingers brushed against something hard tucked deep inside the inner folds of the white blanket around Leo’s stomach.
Clara reached into the blanket and pulled out a tiny, unlabeled glass medicine vial with a rubber stopper—completely empty.
Her fair face went instantly pale. She looked up at the towering Mafia boss with eyes filled with sudden terror.
Clara (whispering): “Dominic… who gave him this?”

Dominic’s intense gaze locked onto the empty vial in her hand, his expression hardening into pure, ice-cold iron.
He slowly turned his head toward one of his own bodyguards standing near the kitchen exit.
