Chapter 4 - the quiet harbor

The silence in the nursery was absolute. Dominic took the brass key from Dante's hand, turning it over under the lamplight.

"Why would a Mafia guard carry a key to a pediatric research clinic in Boston?" Dominic asked, his dark eyes fixed on Clara.

"Because St. Jude's wasn't just a clinic," Clara whispered, her body trembling slightly as memories flooded back. "Three years ago, a private pharmaceutical firm took over the research wing. They were testing experimental cardiac drugs on infant patients. My son Ethan was one of those infants."

Dominic's chest heaved as the dark connections began to form in his mind. He pulled out his satellite phone, dialing his private legal team. "Trace every corporate entity tied to St. Jude's Research Wing in Boston between 2023 and 2025. I want names and wire transfers."

Ten minutes later, the legal report landed on Dominic's tablet.

Dominic scanned the screen, his jaw setting like iron. "The parent company that owns the Boston clinic is Apex Bio-Tech... registered under Marcus Vance."

Marcus Vance was Dominic's primary rival in the Midwest shipping syndicate—a ruthless criminal who had been attempting to force Dominic into surrendering control of the Chicago river docks for months.

"Vance didn't want to kill Leo," Clara realized, her sharp nursing mind putting the final pieces together. "He wanted to keep him chronically ill. He used the same chemical formula he tested in Boston to weaken Leo's stomach, forcing you into exhaustion and chaos so you would sign over the dock leases during the negotiations!"

Dominic's broad frame radiated a lethal, terrifying fury. "Vance used my son's health as a business tactic."

"And he killed my son two years ago while testing it," Clara added, tears glistening in her eyes.

Dominic stepped up to her, taking her small hand in his broad, calloused palm. "Then Vance dies for both of them, Clara."
