Chapter 14 - silent nursery

At two in the morning, the heavy iron gates of Vane Manor loomed out of the thick river fog like the jaws of a dormant beast. The sprawling Victorian estate sat atop a dark granite cliff overlooking the Hudson, its tall slate towers buried in darkness save for a single amber light glowing on the third floor—the nursery where I had rocked Leo to sleep only forty-eight hours ago.

Maya parked her beat-up sedan in an overgrown gravel turnoff half a mile down the estate line. We moved through the dense pine woods on foot, the cold rain soaking through my canvas jacket as I carried Leo securely strapped inside a rainproof chest carrier beneath my coat.

"The west garden door has a mechanical lock that bypasses the main security panel," Sarah whispered, leading us through the wet rhododendron bushes toward the rear stone terrace.

She inserted the small brass key into the narrow wrought-iron door beneath the kitchen archway. The lock turned with a dry, muffled click. We slipped inside, the air immediately turning thick with the familiar smell of lavender floor wax, old oil paintings, and lemon tea.

We moved like ghosts through the cavernous service hallway, stepping over the thick oriental rugs to muffle our footsteps. The mansion was dead silent, save for the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the main foyer.

We reached the heavy double mahogany doors of Eleanor’s private study on the ground floor. Sarah stepped up to the door, pulling a set of lock picks from her pocket. Within thirty seconds, the brass latch yielded with a soft metallic snap.

We stepped inside, closing the heavy door behind us. The study was vast, lined with thousands of leather-bound books and dominated by a massive carved oak desk overlooking the dark lawn outside.

Maya immediately walked over to the third bookcase on the eastern wall, running her fingers along the carved rosewood trim until her knuckle pressed a hidden brass lever. With a low, mechanical groan, the bottom section of shelves swung outward, revealing a black steel floor safe fitted with a digital keypad and an emergency keyhole.

"Sarah," Maya whispered. "Get the bypass tool."

Before Sarah could reach into her bag, the overhead chandelier suddenly burst into brilliant, blinding white light.

"I expected you to use the cellar entrance, Laura," a smooth, cultured voice spoke from the shadows near the fireplace.
