Chapter 20 - ELODIE QUITS BALLET
Elodie quit ballet at twelve.
That devastated almost everyone except Elodie.
“Why?”
I asked.
“I want fencing.”
Of course.
Genevieve laughed for twenty minutes.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“What about ballet?”
“I like it. I like fencing more.”
No trauma explanation.
No Marcella.
No grand symbolic departure.
She simply changed interests.
I had to stop myself from protecting ballet as proof that Marcella had failed.
Elodie did not owe me that proof.
So we bought fencing gear.
The first time she put on the mask, I nearly made a Mafia joke.
