Chapter 23 - MARCELLA SEES ELODIE AGAIN
Elodie was sixteen when she chose to attend a family wedding where Marcella would be present.
They had seen each other across rooms before.
Never spoken directly since childhood.
Marcella approached only after asking me whether Elodie was open to it.
I asked Elodie.
She said:
“Five minutes.”
Good.
Marcella came over.
“You look like your mother.”
Elodie smiled.
“People say.”
Then silence.
Marcella said:
“I am sorry I cut your shoe.”
Elodie nodded.
“I know.”
“I was trying to make you miss the performance.”
“I know.”
“I was wrong.”
“Yes.”
No hug.
Then Elodie asked:
“Did Scarlett want my part?”
“No.”
“I know that too.”
That mattered.
Children often remember who did not betray them.
Marcella looked relieved.
Elodie did not offer more.
