Chapter 5 - THE DRESS ORDERED TWICE

Marcella had ordered a second opening costume.

Not another copy for Scarlett’s existing role.

A duplicate of Elodie’s.

Same blue trim.

Same ribbon.

Scarlett’s size.

The order was placed twelve days before the gala.

That made sabotage premeditated at least in concept.

Her lawyer argued backup costumes were normal.

They were.

Hannah explained why this one was unusual.

Bellweather handled costumes centrally.

Parents did not order replacements privately unless authorized.

Marcella used the original costume designer through a personal relationship and paid herself.

Then she emailed:

Need a complete opening look in case casting shifts.

The designer assumed Bellweather had approved.

Reasonable.

Then Marcella asked for rush delivery.

Casting had already been final.

No planned shift.

Then another message.

To her mother:

Scarlett needs to be ready if the academy comes to its senses.

No crime.

Clear intent.

Then:

I will not watch another senior-branch girl take what should have been ours.

There.

Not what should be Scarlett’s.

Ours.

Marcella and Scarlett fused into one unfinished childhood.

Then I asked about the scissors.

Why sewing scissors?

Marcella had been helping with last-minute costume adjustments in the dressing area because she had years of dance-parent experience.

The scissors belonged to her personal sewing kit.

No hidden weapon brought specifically to attack a child.

Important.

She had the means because of ordinary preparation.

Then anger met opportunity.

Could she have planned to cut the ribbons beforehand?

Her earlier messages about shoes “breaking” suggested yes.

Could we prove she intended specifically to use scissors before that moment?

Not yet.

Again.

Precision.

Then Elodie’s shoe.

The ribbons could have been replaced.

A skilled wardrobe person could sew new ones.

But not with minutes before departure to Saint Gabriel’s Hall unless spare shoes existed.

Without Scarlett’s warning, Elodie probably would have missed at least the opening.

Marcella’s plan would have worked.

The academy would have needed another child.

Scarlett had learned the opening spacing at home.

Why?

Marcella made her practice from a rehearsal video.

Scarlett admitted it.

Not happily.

“I thought Mom wanted me to know everybody’s part.”

At nine, plausible.

Then Hannah showed me attendance records.

Marcella had asked three times whether Elodie was “reliable.”

Once because Elodie had a cold.

Once because she arrived ten minutes late.

Once because she cried during a rehearsal.

Each time Hannah answered:

“She is four.”

That sentence followed us everywhere.

Adults kept forgetting scale.

Four.

Not a rival prima ballerina.

May you like

Not a political heir.

A four-year-old learning where to stand under blue light.
