Chapter 23

The sprawling, luxurious penthouse in downtown Chicago transformed into a high-tech, militarized command center overnight. The massive mahogany table, once used for legitimate boardroom negotiations, was now covered in encrypted topographical maps, satellite feeds, and international shipping manifests. The atmosphere was thick with the scent of expensive coffee and the electric, suffocating tension of impending violence.
Sarah walked into the command center, carrying a silver tray with hot espresso. At forty-one, she remained deeply beautiful, her dark hair framing a face that was etched with profound maternal concern. She set the tray down and immediately walked over to Dominic, gently resting her hand on his broad shoulder. He reached up, covering her soft hand with his own, seeking the familiar comfort that had anchored his soul for a decade.
"Are they targeting the estate in Colorado?" Sarah asked softly, her deep blue eyes reflecting the horrifying memories of the freezing wilderness and the ruined ranger station where Mark had once cornered her with a gun.
"No, Sarah. The mountain lodge is a fortress," Dominic reassured her, kissing the back of her hand. "But I have ordered a secondary security detail to surround you at all times. Mark knows that his only leverage against me is the people I love."
Noah sat at the far end of the mahogany table, his fingers flying across the keys of a heavily encrypted laptop. He had bypassed the firewalls of three South American intelligence agencies, utilizing the immense capital and digital dominance of the Bellacorte conglomerate to trace the ghost signals emanating from the hijacked freighters.
"I found the anomaly," Noah announced, his voice steady, masking the adrenaline coursing through his veins.
Richard, Dominic, and Frank immediately moved to stand behind Noah's chair, staring intently at the glowing screen.
"The distress beacons weren't merely deactivated; they were cloned," Noah explained, bringing up a complex string of hexadecimal code. "The signal bounced through a series of proxy servers in Geneva, Switzerland—the exact same banking hub where the Iron Collar once operated. But the physical origin of the hack traces back to a heavily fortified compound deep in the Amazon basin. A sector controlled by the 'Los Sombras' cartel."
"A drug cartel?" Frank frowned, crossing his arms. "You permanently severed all ties with the South American cartels ten years ago, Boss. They don't have the cyber infrastructure to pull off a maritime hijacking of this scale."
"They don't," Dominic agreed, his pale gray eyes narrowing as he analyzed the data. "But they have thousands of heavily armed mercenaries, unlimited untraceable cash, and a profound hatred for the Bellacorte family after we cut off their supply lines. Mark must have crawled to them, offering our internal security protocols in exchange for their protection and resources."
Richard tapped his ebony cane against the marble floor, his sharp features carved from pure stone. "If Mark is hiding in the Amazon under the protection of Los Sombras, an overt corporate counter-strike won't reach him. We cannot subpoena a jungle fortress."
Noah turned in his leather chair, looking directly at his father and grandfather. The innocence of his childhood was completely overridden by the dark, calculating genius inherited from his bloodline. "Then we don't use a subpoena. We use bait."
Dominic looked at his son in surprise. "What kind of bait, Noah?"
May you like
"Mark is obsessed with the wealth he believes was stolen from him," Noah said, his blue eyes icy and absolute. "He lost the timber operations and the mountain estate to a three-year-old child. His ego is fragile. If we fabricate a massive, highly vulnerable financial transfer—routing five hundred million dollars through a supposedly unsecured offshore account in Geneva—Mark won't be able to resist attempting to intercept it. When his hackers access the dummy account, my tracking malware will infiltrate their mainframe, permanently disabling the cartel's security grid. And then..."
Noah paused, looking at the heavily scarred face of his father. "...then we send in the ghosts."
