Chapter 1

The teddy bear belonged to Lily’s late mother, Emily.
Ryan remembered buying it with her at a hospital gift shop shortly after Lily was born.
What he did not remember was a camera.
His security director, Caleb Stone, inspected it that night.
“It’s old.”
“How old?”
“Probably two years.”
Ryan looked at him.
“Was it part of my security system?”
“No.”
“Then why is it in my daughter’s toy?”
Caleb examined the damaged eye.
“Commercial nanny camera. Local memory card. Wi-Fi capable.”
Ryan felt a sudden wave of guilt.
“Emily?”
“Maybe.”
Emily had died eighteen months earlier after a short illness.
She had worried constantly about Lily during the final months when nurses, relatives, and household employees moved through the estate every day.
Installing a nanny camera without telling Ryan would have been entirely believable.
Caleb removed the memory card.
“We should have an outside forensic technician copy it.”
“Why outside?”
Caleb hesitated.
“Because Vanessa will have lawyers.”
Ryan noticed the pause.
“So will I.”
He sent the device to an independent digital-forensics firm.
No one from his security team was allowed to touch the data.
That decision irritated Caleb.
Ryan noticed that too.
The next morning Marian gave Ryan a list.
Seven dates when Vanessa ordered staff away.
Five matched Ryan’s overnight absences.
On another, he had been at a charity dinner until midnight.
The seventh was the day of the cage.
“What happened on those nights?” Ryan asked.
Marian shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“Did Lily seem different afterward?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She stopped wanting baths unless I stayed in the room.”
Ryan said nothing.
“She started hiding crackers under her pillow.”
His expression hardened.
“She cried when Miss Vanessa told her you were leaving town.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
He had interpreted that as separation anxiety.
Vanessa always comforted him.
“She’ll adjust,” she would say.
“She needs to learn Daddy comes back.”
Now those words sounded completely different.
Marian added one last detail.
“Miss Vanessa kept notes.”
“What notes?”
“About Lily.”
Ryan looked at her.
“She called them behavior records.”

That was the first clue that Vanessa had not merely been losing her temper.
She had been documenting what happened afterward.
