Chapter 4

Ryan ordered Caleb to preserve every security log.

“Already doing it.”

“Do not delete anything.”

Caleb sounded offended.

“You think I would?”

“I think my daughter spent time in a dog cage inside the most heavily secured property I own.”

Silence.

Ryan continued.

“So right now, I’m not assuming anything about anyone.”

That conversation damaged something between them.

Caleb had worked for Ryan for fourteen years.

He had protected Lily since birth.

But Ryan had finally learned the cost of confusing history with proof.

The security review found four camera outages.

Each lasted between forty minutes and three hours.

Each had been described as routine privacy maintenance.

All occurred while Ryan was away.

Two had been approved through an executive security account assigned to Caleb.

He denied making the requests.

“Someone copied my credentials.”

“Possible.”

“You don’t believe me.”

“I’m waiting.”

Caleb stared at him.

Ryan recognized the anger.

He also recognized himself in it.

That made him more cautious, not less.

The outside security firm reviewing the records found another oddity.

Three of Ryan’s recent trips had been extended because of last-minute security problems.

A vehicle inspection in Atlantic City.

A supposed threat at a restaurant in New York.

A suspicious package at one of Ryan’s warehouses.

None became real emergencies.

Each kept Ryan away several additional hours.

Each happened on a date Vanessa later documented one of Lily’s worst “behavior episodes.”

Rebecca drew the dates into one timeline.

Ryan looked at it.

“You think somebody was keeping me away.”

“I think somebody benefited from you staying away.”

That distinction mattered.

Ryan asked Marian whether Vanessa ever knew his changing schedules before staff did.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She said security called her.”

“Who?”

“She never said.”

Another clue.

Ryan had begun to see the shape of a system around Vanessa.

But he still could not tell whether she had built it herself or merely discovered how easily his household could be manipulated.
