Chapter 2

Vanessa’s attorney produced the behavior records voluntarily.

Rebecca Sloan, Ryan’s lawyer, read them first.

Then she told Ryan not to react until she finished.

“Why?”

“Because that usually means you’re about to react.”

He sat down.

The file covered almost four months.

It described screaming episodes.

Food refusal.

Nightmares.

Aggression toward Vanessa.

Fear of separation.

Regression in toilet training.

One entry claimed Lily had deliberately locked herself inside a pantry.

Another said she had tried to crawl beneath outdoor furniture to avoid punishment.

Ryan looked up.

“These started after Vanessa began sending staff away.”

“Yes.”

“Does her attorney realize that?”

“Probably not yet.”

The records were written in Vanessa’s polished language.

Lily becomes dysregulated when boundaries are enforced.

Lily demonstrates unhealthy dependence on father.

Lily appears unable to tolerate normal adult separation.

Ryan hated every sentence.

Not because children could not struggle.

Because he could hear Vanessa’s voice inside them.

Rebecca continued.

“Vanessa also consulted a child-development specialist.”

“When?”

“Two months ago.”

“Without telling me?”

“Yes.”

Ryan stood.

Rebecca pointed toward the chair.

He sat again.

The specialist, Dr. Laura Bennett, agreed to speak after receiving proper authorization.

Her account differed sharply from Vanessa’s.

“I never diagnosed Lily.”

“What did Vanessa ask you?”

“She described severe behavioral difficulties.”

“Did you see Lily?”

“Once.”

“What did you observe?”

“A shy three-year-old.”

Ryan stared.

“That’s it?”

“She became upset when Vanessa raised her voice.”

“Did you recommend punishment?”

“No.”

“Confinement?”

“Absolutely not.”

Rebecca asked the important question.

“Did Vanessa request a written recommendation?”

Dr. Bennett hesitated.

“She wanted me to state that Lily might benefit from living in a more controlled environment for a period of time.”

Ryan’s hand tightened around the edge of the table.

“What environment?”

“She was vague.”

“Did you write it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I had no basis.”

After the call, Rebecca remained silent.

Ryan looked at Vanessa’s behavior file.

Four months of carefully documented problems.

And a request that an independent professional recommend removing Lily from her normal environment.

Something had been moving toward a destination.

Ryan just didn’t know what it was yet.
