Chapter 5

A contractor named Paul Ames provided the next piece.
He renovated one of Ryan’s country properties outside Lake Geneva.
The job was supposed to be simple.
New flooring.
Updated bathrooms.
Security improvements.
Then Vanessa became involved.
“She changed the second-floor plan,” Paul said.
Ryan frowned.
“How?”
“One bedroom became a child’s suite.”
“For Lily?”
“That’s what I assumed.”
“I never approved that.”
Paul opened the architectural file.
The new suite had its own sleeping room, playroom, bathroom, and small caregiver bedroom beside it.
Separate from the main family bedrooms.
A secure stairway allowed staff to reach it without passing through the principal suite.
Ryan stared at the plans.
“When was this ordered?”
“Six weeks ago.”
“By Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“Who paid?”
“Estate renovation account.”
Rebecca looked at Ryan.
He had given Vanessa limited wedding-planning authority over two properties.
He had not expected her to redesign where his daughter would live.
Then came the caregiver contract.
A private childcare agency had been contacted to provide rotating live-in staff beginning two weeks after the wedding.
The location:
Lake Geneva.
Not Ryan’s primary residence.
The intake request described Lily as:
A child with severe behavioral dysregulation requiring highly structured routine away from overstimulating household environment.
Ryan read the sentence slowly.
Rebecca said:
“This is still a proposal.”
“She was planning to move my daughter.”
“She was exploring it.”
“That’s a lawyer’s sentence.”
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
Rebecca did not blink.
“We need the facts clean.”
Ryan forced himself to breathe.
He called the childcare agency with counsel present.
The agency director said Vanessa described the arrangement as already approved in principle.
“She told us Mr. Carter wanted his daughter stabilized before school enrollment.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
He had said no such thing.
Vanessa had been preparing a separate residence.
A professional staff.

And a paper trail describing Lily as unable to function normally in Ryan’s home.
The destination of those behavior records was becoming clearer.
