Chapter 7

Rebecca gave Ryan three options.
The first was the easiest.
Settle privately with Vanessa.
Cancel the wedding.
Pay whatever contractual costs were necessary.
Remove her from Lily’s life.
Conduct an internal security review.
Keep everything else inside the Carter family.
The second was harder.
File for a formal protective order and let child-welfare authorities investigate Vanessa while keeping Ryan’s wider security operation private.
The third was the one Rebecca expected him to refuse.
Authorize independent investigators to examine every household-security system, staffing authorization, travel alert, financial payment, and internal message connected to the dates Lily had been mistreated.
No exclusions for Ryan’s organization.
No guarantee investigators would ignore unrelated misconduct if they discovered it.
Ryan stared at the authorization.
“You know what they could find.”
“Yes.”
“My people will fight this.”
“Yes.”
“My own position could be affected.”
“Yes.”
“Why are you recommending it?”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Because every person who failed Lily did it behind your name.”
That sentence landed.
Vanessa said Ryan approved.
Staff obeyed because they feared questioning him.
Security outages carried his authorization.
Professionals were told he had already made decisions.
Ryan’s power had become camouflage for things he never ordered.
He signed.
Rebecca watched him.
“You understand this doesn’t come back once it leaves the room.”
“I know.”
That afternoon the petition for a protective order was filed.
The engagement cancellation became final.
Wedding deposits were forfeited.
Contracts were terminated.
Vanessa’s attorneys immediately became aggressive.
Ryan refused private negotiation.
His uncle called him reckless.
One capo accused him of letting outsiders into family systems over “domestic drama.”
Ryan ended the man’s role in his legitimate security company the same day.
The decision cost him relationships that had lasted decades.
He did not reverse it.

For the first time, protecting Lily required Ryan to accept something he had spent his adult life avoiding.
People outside his control would decide what the evidence meant.
