Chapter 1 - the price of a life

The silence inside the east wing of the Moretti estate was never peaceful. It was heavy, weighted with the scent of polished mahogany, fresh linen, and the quiet hum of central climate control keeping the autumn chill off the high glass windows. Outside, the sprawling hills of upstate New York rolled into mist, but inside, every shadow carried the presence of one man.
Melissa Hart sat on the edge of the oversized California king bed, her bare feet barely grazing the plush cream carpet. In her arms, wrapped securely in a pale, hand-knitted blanket, three-week-old Matteo slept against her chest. The infant’s breathing was rhythmic, small puffs of warm air brushing against Melissa’s collarbone. She smoothed a thumb over his dark tuft of hair, her heart aching with an intensity that terrified her.
Across the room, near the double doors that led out onto the private terrace, Adrian Moretti sat in his black luxury wheelchair. Even seated, stripped of the towering physical dominance that had ruled the Eastern seaboard for two decades, Adrian was arresting. His broad shoulders stretched the fabric of a tailored black long-sleeve shirt, unbuttoned just enough at the throat to reveal the dark, intricate ink trailing up the side of his neck. His jaw was lined with short, neat dark stubble, framing sharp, masculine features that looked as though they had been carved from marble. His eyes, pale and intensely observant, did not leave Melissa.
Dr. Vance, the personal physician on Adrian’s payroll, clicked his leather bag shut. The sound was brisk and professional.
"His vitals are exceptional, Mr. Moretti," the doctor said, keeping his voice subdued. "The jaundice has cleared completely. The mother’s recovery is also progressing on schedule. I will return on Friday for the one-month evaluation."
Adrian didn't look at the doctor. His pale gaze remained locked on Melissa. "Make sure the nursery remains stocked with whatever she asks for. Don't make her ask twice."
"Of course, sir."
The doctor bowed his head slightly, stepped backward, and quietly exited through the double doors, leaving the heavy oak room in complete stillness once again.
Melissa lowered her eyes to the small stack of papers resting on the nightstand beside her. They were billing notices, stamped with the red urgent seals of St. Jude Memorial Hospital in Boston. Two hundred and forty thousand dollars for experimental cellular therapy. The third round of treatment for her mother. The only reason Melissa had signed her name to Adrian Moretti’s ironclad surrogate contract nine months ago.
She had arrived in his life under an assumed past, a quiet, unremarkable woman from the Midwest with pristine health records and no living family on paper. She had agreed to carry his heir in exchange for a sum of money that could buy a hospital wing. She was supposed to deliver the baby, surrender parental rights, and vanish into the wind.
Instead, when Matteo arrived, Adrian hadn't handed her an exit packet. He had brought her here, to the family wing of his fortress, surrounding her with security and silent care while he recovered from a recent ambush that had damaged his lower spine.
Melissa reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as she picked up the hospital invoices. She cleared her throat, keeping her voice as steady as she could manage.
"I’ll deduct it from the payment," she murmured, looking directly into his piercing eyes. "The transfer for the clinic went through this morning. I know you paid it. I’ll make sure it comes out of my final balance."
Adrian’s expression did not soften, but his jaw clenched. His hand, heavily tattooed with geometric lines down to his knuckles, rested firmly on the armrest of his chair.
"No," Adrian said, his deep American accent cutting through the room with quiet finality. "Your mother has nothing to do with the contract."
Melissa stared at him, caught off guard. "Adrian, that wasn't the arrangement. The contract said—"
"The contract is between you and me," Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, rich and dangerously calm. "Whatever keeps your mother breathing is my business as long as you are under this roof. You carried my blood for nine months. You gave me a son. I don't barter over hospital bills."
He adjusted the controls of the chair, turning smoothly toward the floor-to-ceiling glass that overlooked the foggy estate grounds.

Melissa pressed Matteo closer to her chest, her pulse racing beneath her skin. He was ruthless to the outside world, a ghost story whispered in backrooms and boardrooms alike. Yet here, in this quiet sanctuary, every gesture he made tore down the walls she had spent years building around her heart.
She looked down at Matteo’s peaceful face, then across at the broad, scarred back of the man who ruled this empire. She knew who he was. But Adrian had no idea who she really was, or whose blood truly flowed through the child sleeping in her arms.
