Chapter 10 - a kingdom reborn

Twenty-four hours later, the estate was bathed in bright, cinematic autumn sunlight.

Teams of private restoration crews were already replacing the broken glass, repairing the heavy oak paneling, and sweeping away the remnants of the night’s violence. The threat from the Salieri family had not just been repelled; it had been extinguished. Adrian’s network had struck back across three states before dawn, cementing his total, unchallenged dominion over the syndicate.

In the master suite, the floor-to-ceiling doors stood wide open, letting in the crisp, sweet mountain breeze.

Adrian sat on the plush sofa near the terrace, his legs resting comfortably on a leather ottoman. The physical therapist had left an hour ago, astonished by the rapid return of Adrian’s nerve sensation—spurred on by adrenaline, sheer will, and the relentless care of the woman who refused to let him stay broken.

Melissa walked in from the nursery, wearing a soft, flowing cream sundress that caught the morning light. She carried Matteo, who was dressed in a pristine white knit sweater, fast asleep in his mother’s arms.

Adrian looked up, his pale eyes softening in a way that would have terrified any of his business associates. He extended a hand toward her.

Melissa took it without hesitation, sitting beside him on the sofa.

Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out the ancient silver Romano signet ring. He took Melissa’s right hand, turning it gently, and slipped the heavy ring back onto her finger.

"This belongs to you," he said softly. "It always did."

Melissa looked down at the silver wolf, then looked up into Adrian’s eyes. "My father would have been proud of the man you became, Adrian. He built an empire, but you protected it with your soul."

Adrian shook his head slightly, his gaze shifting to the sleeping child between them.

"I didn't protect it for the empire, Melissa," he confessed, his deep voice thick with emotion. "I spent ten years thinking I was fighting for a ghost. But last night, when the alarms went off... I realized I wasn't fighting for Gabriel’s memory. I was fighting for my family."

He reached out, his tattooed fingers gently brushing against Matteo’s soft cheek. The infant smiled in his sleep, leaning into his father’s touch.

Melissa felt tears prick the corners of her eyes, but this time, they were born of pure, unshakable peace. She reached over, covering Adrian’s hand with her own.

"The contract is void," Adrian murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that took her breath away. "There are no terms. There is no final payment. You and Matteo are not leaving this house. Not unless you want to."

Melissa leaned in, resting her head against Adrian’s broad shoulder, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her cheek.

"I'm not going anywhere, Adrian," she whispered. "Our family stays together."

Through the open terrace doors, the morning sun rose high above the mountains, casting golden light over the sprawling estate. The ghost of the Romano past had finally found its peace, and in its place, a new kingdom had risen—built not on blood and contracts, but on loyalty, truth, and unbreakable love.
