Chapter 8 - the architect’s blood

The emergency lights inside the tunnel cast a soft, amber glow against the smooth concrete walls.

Adrian lay against the wall of the passage, his breathing ragged, his hand still gripping his sidearm. His gaze went straight to the corner where Matteo lay quietly on Melissa’s coat, the infant blinking up at the amber lights without a single tear.

Melissa dropped to her knees beside Adrian, checking his arms and chest for injuries. "Are you hit?"

Adrian caught her wrist. His grip was firm, warm, and entirely steady. "I'm fine. Melissa... look at me."

She stopped, her dark eyes meeting his.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked quietly, the question stripped of anger, filled only with deep, aching bewilderment. "When you saw my name on the contract... when you came to this house. Why keep the ring hidden?"

Melissa let out a ragged breath, leaning back on her heels. "Because I didn't know who you were anymore, Adrian. Ten years ago, you were my father’s young enforcer. But ten years is a lifetime. You took his territory. You took his clients. You took his seat at the high table. For all I knew, you were the one who betrayed him."

Adrian flinched as if struck.

"I didn't want your money," Melissa continued, her voice trembling with emotion. "I wanted to see who ruled my father’s world. But when I met you... when I watched you protect this home, when I saw how you treated your people, and how you protected my mother... I realized you were the only man left on earth who still carried my father’s code."

Marco, who had been wrapping his injured forearm with a tactical bandage, looked up in stunned realization. He stared at Melissa, his weathered face draining of color. "Don Gabriel’s girl... The little princess from Chicago. God in heaven, it's really you."

"Marco knew," Melissa whispered, glancing at the security chief.

"Marco was there the day Gabriel gave me my first crew," Adrian said quietly. He looked down at Matteo, who made a soft cooing noise, reaching tiny fists into the cool air. "And that boy... he isn't just the heir to the Moretti syndicate. He is the rightful heir to the entire Romano crown."

Outside the thick titanium blast doors, a heavy thud echoed. The intruders had brought breaching charges.

Marco checked his magazine. "They're trying to blow the blast doors. Those charges won't cut through eight inches of hardened steel, but they'll eventually burn through the electronic locks if they have enough thermite."

Adrian grabbed the railing along the tunnel wall, hauling himself upright onto his feet with fierce determination. His legs trembled, but he stood, his back straight, his eyes burning with the cold, lethal fire of a king ready to defend his throne.

"They aren't burning through anything," Adrian said coldly. "This passage doesn't just lead out, does it, Melissa?"

Melissa looked at him, a fierce, knowing smile touching her lips for the first time. "No. It doesn't."
