Chapter 5 - the breach

Red emergency lights flickered to life along the baseboards, casting long, crimson shadows across the high ceilings. The sound of distant suppressed gunfire rattled through the concrete floors—muffled, methodical, and close.

Marco’s voice crackled through the comm unit on Adrian’s shoulder. *"Boss! Southern perimeter breached! They took out the generator backup with an EMP charge! We’re falling back to the main foyer! Move to the vault now!"*

Adrian pressed the comm switch. "Hold the main stairs. We're moving."

He spun his chair toward Melissa, his voice commanding and devoid of fear. "The safe room is behind the wine cellar downstairs. It's solid reinforced titanium. Marco has the code. Take Matteo and hide."

He reached out to push Matteo’s portable bassinet toward her, but Melissa didn't take it.

Instead, she did the unthinkable.

She completely ignored the route to the basement stairs. Cradling Matteo securely with one arm, she sprinted down the private hall, moving directly toward the north corridor—toward Adrian’s private, restricted library.

"Melissa! Stop!" Adrian roared, his voice booming over the sirens. "That's a dead end! The safe room is downstairs!"

Using the powerful electric drive of his luxury wheelchair, Adrian accelerated down the hall behind her, the high-torque motor humming as he pursued her through the dim, red-lit corridor.

The house shuddered as an explosion took out the exterior glass of the conservatory downstairs. The screams of fighting men echoed up the grand stairwell. Time was running out.

Melissa reached the towering, hand-carved mahogany double doors of Adrian’s personal library. She shoved them open with her shoulder and ran inside.

Adrian rolled in right behind her, preparing to draw his weapon and physically drag her back toward the vault. "What the hell are you doing?! There is nowhere to run in here! You're trapping my son!"

Melissa didn't look back. She walked swiftly across the Persian rug, moving with unerring, terrifying confidence straight toward an ancient floor-to-ceiling bookshelf filled with first-edition legal volumes—books Adrian had inherited when he bought the estate eight years ago from an anonymous bank liquidation.

She didn't hesitate. Her slender fingers bypassed the newer volumes, reaching straight for a dusty, leather-bound copy of Dante’s *Inferno* on the third shelf. She pushed the spine inward three inches, then slid it precisely two inches to the right.

A deep mechanical click reverberated inside the wall.

With a smooth, pneumatic hiss, an entire eight-foot section of the solid stone bookshelf swung inward, revealing a dimly lit, steel-reinforced tunnel stretching deep into the bedrock beneath the foundation.

Adrian halted his chair so abruptly the tires squealed on the hardwood.

He stared at the open passage, then at Melissa, his pale eyes wide with complete shock.

He had lived in this mansion for nearly a decade. He had mapped every inch of its security, gutted the walls, installed top-tier surveillance, and poured millions into fortifying it.

He had never known that door existed.

"How..." Adrian’s voice was barely a whisper against the sirens wailing outside. "How do you know about that passage?"

Melissa turned around slowly to face him. Her rosy face was composed, her dark eyes shining with ancient grief and unyielding authority.

With her free hand, she reached beneath the collar of her charcoal sweater, pulling out a thin platinum chain that had hung hidden beneath her clothes every second she had lived in his home. On the chain hung a heavy, tarnished silver signet ring, engraved with an intricate crest: a roaring wolf crowned by three five-pointed stars.

She slid the ring off the chain and slipped it onto her middle finger.

"My name isn't Melissa Hart," she said, her voice clear, steady, and resonant with power. "It’s Melissa Romano."

Adrian’s breath stopped in his throat.
