Chapter 2 - midnight vulnerability

The digital clock on the bedside console read 2:14 in the morning. The mansion was wrapped in an eerie, velvet quiet, broken only by the intermittent hum of the security patrol vehicles cruising the outer perimeters five hundred yards away.
Melissa woke not to a sound, but to an absence of it.
Matteo usually stirred around two, letting out small, hungry grunts that woke her before he could cry. But tonight, the room was cold. A faint draft slipped beneath the terrace doors, carrying the smell of wet earth and coming rain.
She sat up slowly, wrapping her cream cashmere robe tightly around her waist, and padded across the heated hardwood floor toward the nursery adjoining the master suite.
When she pushed the door open, she froze.
Adrian was there.
He was wearing simple black cotton sweatpants and a dark t-shirt that clung to his muscular frame, showing the heavy ink covering his arms. His black wheelchair sat empty, turned sideways against the wall.
Adrian was on his feet, holding onto the dark cherrywood railing of Matteo’s crib with white-knuckled intensity. His tall frame swayed slightly. His jaw was clenched so hard the muscles in his neck bulged, sweat glistening on his temples under the soft yellow nightlight. He was attempting to stand unassisted, his legs trembling beneath the strain of spinal nerve regeneration.
He was trying to reach inside to comfort his son, but his body betrayed him. His right knee buckled, and a low, guttural breath escaped his teeth as his hand slipped from the wood.
Before he could hit the floor, Melissa moved.
She didn't call out. She didn't summon the guards stationed at the end of the hall. She crossed the room in three swift, silent steps, sliding beneath his left shoulder and locking her arm around his waist, anchoring her hips against his side to bear his weight.
"I've got you," she whispered, her voice fierce and steady in the dark. "Lean on me. Adrian, lean."
Adrian’s breath was hot and ragged against her neck. For a fraction of a second, his pride flared—she could feel the rigid resistance in his spine, the instinct to push her away and stand on his own fury. But gravity and physical exhaustion won. He exhaled a shuddering breath, allowing his massive frame to sink partially into her support.
She could feel the heat radiating from his skin, the scent of cedar and clean soap, the raw power of a man fighting his own broken flesh. With synchronized, careful steps, Melissa guided him backward toward his chair. She absorbed the brunt of his weight until his hips touched the leather cushion, and he sank down, his breathing ragged.
Matteo, startled by the movement and the rustle of clothing, let out a sharp, pitiful wail from inside the crib.
Adrian dropped his head into his hands, his broad shoulders rising and falling rapidly. "Damn it," he grated out, his voice hoarse with frustration. "I can't even pick up my own son."
The words cut deep, exposing a raw, bleeding wound in the armor of a man who commanded an army of killers.
Melissa didn't offer empty platitudes. She didn't tell him it was fine, because for a man like Adrian Moretti, nothing about helplessness was fine. Instead, she reached into the crib, scooping Matteo into her arms and wrapping the blanket snugly around him.
She turned to Adrian. "Look at him."
Adrian slowly lifted his head, his dark eyes shadowed with defeat.
Melissa stepped forward, gently leaning down until she placed the crying infant squarely against Adrian’s chest.
"Hold him," she commanded softly.
Adrian hesitated, his large hands hovering in the air as if he feared his own strength might break something so fragile. Then, guided by Melissa’s gentle touch, his tattooed hands folded around the baby, one hand cradling the back of Matteo’s tiny neck, the other supporting his lower back.
The moment the baby felt the warmth of his father’s chest and heard the deep, steady thud of Adrian’s heartbeat, the crying stopped.
Matteo gave a tiny shuddering sigh, buried his small face into the crook of Adrian’s neck, and fell completely silent.

Adrian’s posture froze. His pale eyes widened slightly as the tension in his shoulders slowly melted away. He looked down at the child resting against his ink-stained skin, completely peaceful, completely trusting.
Melissa stood beside the chair, her hand resting instinctively on Adrian’s shoulder. For a long, breathless minute, neither of them spoke. The terrifying mafia don and the woman harboring a deadly secret stood united in the nursery lamplight, bound together by the steady pulse of their newborn child.
