Chapter 9 - the lion’s strike

"There's an armory at the junction," Melissa said, pointing down the narrow corridor toward a heavy steel hatch fifty feet away. "My father designed this house as a contingency fortress. The tunnel branches into two paths: one exits to the highway, the other circles behind the library walls into the second-floor gallery overlooking the main foyer."
Adrian looked at Marco, the unspoken tactical plan instantly clicking into place.
"They think we're trapped in a bunker," Marco grunted, a grim smirk appearing on his face. "They have their backs completely exposed to the gallery."
Adrian turned to Melissa. He reached out, his hand cupping the side of her neck, pulling her gently toward him until their foreheads touched. The heat between them was electric, forged in the fires of danger and shared blood.
"Stay here with Matteo," Adrian murmured, his voice thick with raw devotion. "Lock this inner door behind us. If anyone other than Marco or me taps three times on the steel, you take the car and you never look back. Do you hear me?"
Melissa reached up, her fingers tangling in the soft dark hair at the nape of his neck. "You come back to us, Adrian Moretti. The Romano family doesn't leave its protectors behind."
Adrian’s eyes flared with intense emotion. He leaned in, pressing a fierce, tender kiss against her lips—a promise, a claim, and a vow all wrapped into one breathless second.
"On my life," he whispered.
Ten minutes later, the main foyer of the Moretti estate was filled with the smoke of tactical charges. Seven heavily armed mercenaries stood clustered beneath the twin crystal chandeliers, their weapons trained on the reinforced doors of the study, completely unaware of the shadow moving along the dark mezzanine above them.
Adrian leaned his upper body securely against the marble balustrade of the second-floor gallery. Supported by Marco, who braced his frame from behind, Adrian held a customized tactical rifle with iron-like stability.
Below them, the leader of the strike team barked into a radio. "The safe room is empty! They're in the walls! Find the conduit—"
Adrian didn't give him the chance to finish.
The synchronized crack of Adrian’s and Marco’s rifles shattered the smoky air. With ruthless, surgical precision, they dismantled the ambush team from the high ground. Every shot was clean, tactical, and decisive. Within forty-five seconds, the intruders were neutralized, disarmed, and pinned beneath the overwhelming superior positioning of the estate’s master.

The silence that followed was absolute.
The sirens outside finally began to wind down as the morning sun broke over the horizon, painting the fractured glass of the conservatory in streaks of bright gold and rose.
