Chapter 1 - The crimson stain on white marble

The grand ballroom of the Vescari estate was a cinematic spectacle of wealth and power, bathed in bright, golden light that cascaded from massive crystal chandeliers. The air was thick with the scent of expensive champagne and imported orchids. Classical music floated through the room, played by a string quartet tucked away in a gilded alcove. Among the towering marble pillars and the sea of elite guests, Amelia Reed moved like a quiet shadow. She was thirty-two, breathtakingly beautiful but completely reserved, her fair and rosy skin contrasting sharply with the crisp, classic black-and-white maid uniform and apron she wore.

Amelia held a silver cleaning tray, her delicate fingers carefully dusting the polished mahogany of the estate’s antique grand piano. It was a magnificent instrument, tucked slightly away from the main dance floor, gleaming under the bright cinematic lights. With practiced grace, she finished wiping the keys and quietly closed the heavy wooden lid, ensuring not a single fingerprint remained on its flawless surface.

From across the room, a flash of luxurious crimson caught the light. Vivienne Vescari, Lorenzo’s glamorous forty-year-old fiancée, was storming toward the piano. Vivienne was a vision of calculated elegance and pure venom, her crimson evening gown trailing behind her, diamond earrings and a heavy diamond bracelet catching the light with every sharp, angry step she took. Her fair skin was flushed with sudden, inexplicable fury.

Before Amelia could step back, Vivienne reached out and violently knocked the silver cleaning tray out of her hands. The tray clattered onto the pristine marble floor, sending soft cloths and polish skidding across the stone. Amelia gasped, looking up just in time to see Vivienne’s hand swing through the air.

A sharp, stinging slap echoed over the low hum of the party, striking Amelia hard across her rosy cheek.

Vivienne stood over her, a vicious smirk twisting her elegant features. “Servants don’t touch family treasures,” she hissed, her American accent dripping with condescension and cruelty.

Amelia staggered slightly, her hand flying to her stinging cheek, her blue eyes wide with shock. The surrounding guests turned, their murmurs dying down, but no one dared to intervene.

At that exact moment, the heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom swung open. Lorenzo Vescari stepped into the light. He was a legendary figure in the city, an immensely powerful and feared mafia boss. Broad-shouldered, rugged, and deeply masculine, he commanded the room without saying a word. He wore a perfectly tailored midnight-black tuxedo, his luxury wristwatch gleaming softly as he adjusted his cuffs. His polished leather shoes made no sound on the marble floor.

Lorenzo stopped abruptly. His frighteningly calm eyes locked onto the scene by the piano. He saw Amelia, her head bowed, trembling slightly as she held her reddened cheek. He saw Vivienne standing over her, her chest heaving with arrogant pride.

No one spoke. The tension in the room was absolute.

Amelia, trying to gather her composure, lowered her gaze to the piano to avoid Lorenzo’s terrifying presence. As she looked down, a beam of bright light caught a tiny, faded silver plate engraved just beneath the edge of the closed lid—a detail she had never noticed in her months of working at the estate.

Amelia froze, her breath hitching in her throat. She leaned closer, her eyes scanning the elegant script.

“That was my mother’s name,” Amelia whispered quietly, her voice trembling but carrying perfectly through the dead silent room.

Vivienne’s eyes went wide with sudden, explosive rage. She let out a sharp cry and lunged toward Amelia, her manicured hands reaching out to grab the maid’s uniform.

But Lorenzo moved faster than anyone could comprehend. He crossed the distance in three massive strides, stepping seamlessly between the two women. He didn't yell. He didn't even change his expression. He simply raised his large hand and delivered one incredibly powerful, open-handed slap across Vivienne’s face.

The force of the blow spun Vivienne backward. Her high heels slipped on the polished marble, and she crashed violently into the towering dessert table behind her. A spectacular explosion of glass cake stands, delicate porcelain plates, towering floral arrangements, and intricate sugar decorations cascaded across the floor in a catastrophic wave of ruin.

The ballroom erupted into gasps, but Lorenzo did not even look at his fiancée. His dark, intense eyes remained locked on Amelia, standing silently by the piano as the chaos unfolded around them.
