Chapter 10 - The threshold of power

The revelation struck the ballroom like a physical blow. The council members stared at Amelia, the beautiful, reserved woman standing tall amidst the chaos. Lorenzo signaled his men, who stepped forward carrying thick leather briefcases, placing them on the tables in front of the elders.
“These are the authenticated transfer documents,” Lorenzo announced, his eyes sweeping the room, daring anyone to challenge him. “Signed, sealed, and verified by the federal banking commission. Amelia Reed holds fifty-one percent of the Vescari syndicate’s legitimate assets. Our banks, our shipping lanes, our real estate. She owns it all. If she falls, the assets freeze, and you all go bankrupt.”
The men of the council opened the briefcases, reviewing the documents with wide eyes. The power dynamic in the room shifted instantly. The violent, bloody men of the underworld bowed to the absolute power of billions of dollars.
Vivienne fell to her knees beside the shattered piano, her black gown pooling around her on the cold marble floor. Her arrogance was completely broken, replaced by a pathetic, desperate weeping. She had sacrificed everything for the crown, only to find out it was an illusion.
“Take her out of my sight,” Lorenzo ordered coldly, not even sparing his former fiancée a glance.
His men grabbed Vivienne, dragging her screaming from the ballroom. She was to be banished, stripped of her name and wealth, left to survive in a world she had spent her life manipulating.
Don Salvo closed his briefcase, looking up at Amelia with newfound respect. “It seems, Miss Reed, that you are the new head of the Vescari family. The council stands behind you.”
Amelia looked at the old, dangerous men. A month ago, she was scrubbing their spilled wine off these very floors. Now, she held their lives and their fortunes in the palm of her hand. She squeezed Lorenzo’s hand, feeling the solid, unwavering strength of the man who had risked everything to bring her home.
“The council will answer to Lorenzo,” Amelia said, her American accent ringing out clear and authoritative in the bright room. “He retains absolute operational control. But make no mistake, gentlemen. The money is mine. And from this day forward, this family operates by my rules.”
The council members bowed their heads in silent agreement, slowly filing out of the ballroom, leaving the new king and queen alone in the vast, cinematic space.
The heavy doors clicked shut. The silence returned to the grand estate.
Amelia exhaled a long, shaking breath, leaning into Lorenzo’s side. He wrapped his massive arms around her, burying his face in her dark hair, breathing in the scent of her. The war was over. The gilded cage was broken.
“You played that perfectly,” Lorenzo murmured against her skin, his voice rough with exhaustion and deep, genuine affection.
“I had a good teacher,” Amelia replied softly, looking up into his rugged, handsome face.
Lorenzo reached into his pocket and pulled out the velvet box from the bank vault. He opened it, revealing Evelyn’s beautiful, simple diamond ring. He didn't drop to one knee. He didn't make a grand speech. He simply took her left hand and slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
Amelia smiled, tears pricking the corners of her eyes, pulling him down for a deep, passionate kiss.
But as they stood in the ruins of the shattered piano, finally at peace, the heavy silence of the ballroom was pierced by a sharp, electronic ring.
Lorenzo’s private encrypted phone, a line that only three people in the world had the number for, was ringing.
He pulled it from his jacket, his brow furrowing as he looked at the blank caller ID. He answered it, putting it on speaker.
A distorted, metallic voice echoed from the small speaker, chilling the warm air in the room.
“Congratulations on your ascension, Amelia,” the voice sneered. “But your mother left more than one trust behind. And the true heir is coming to collect.”

The line went dead.
Lorenzo looked at Amelia, his frighteningly calm eyes narrowing as a dark, dangerous shadow crossed his face. The piano was broken, the diamond was fake, but the symphony of violence in the Vescari empire had only just begun to play.
