Chapter 5 - The shadow of the father

The heavy lock on the guest suite door began to turn slowly, scraping metallic against the silence. Lorenzo raised his weapon, his massive frame perfectly still in the darkness. The moonlight spilling through the window illuminated the sharp, rugged lines of his profile. He was not just a businessman; he was a predator in his natural element.

The door burst open. Two men in tactical gear flooded into the room, raising suppressed weapons.

Lorenzo fired twice. The loud, sharp cracks echoed like thunder. Both men dropped to the floor instantly, neutralized before they even had a chance to pull their triggers. There was no graphic violence, just the swift, frightening efficiency of a mafia boss defending his territory.

“Move,” Lorenzo ordered, grabbing Amelia’s hand. His grip was warm and incredibly strong.

He pulled her out of the room, stepping over the fallen men, and dragged her down the long, dark corridor. The mansion was eerily quiet, the normal army of guards either compromised or already taken out by Vivienne’s loyalists. Amelia struggled to keep up, her black flats slipping slightly on the marble floors, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“Where are we going?” she whispered frantically.

“The servant corridors,” Lorenzo replied, pulling her behind a large marble statue as a patrol of three men swept past the grand staircase, sweeping the area with flashlights. “My father built a secondary escape route into the walls. Only he and I knew about it.”

He pressed his hand against a seemingly solid wood-paneled wall, finding a hidden latch. The panel clicked and swung inward, revealing a narrow, pitch-black passageway. He pushed Amelia inside and pulled the door shut behind them, plunging them into total darkness.

Lorenzo pulled out a small tactical flashlight, clicking it on. The beam illuminated a narrow stone staircase leading deep into the bowels of the estate.

As they descended, the air grew cold and damp. Amelia looked at the broad shoulders of the man leading her. He had sacrificed his own men, abandoned his own party, and was risking his entire criminal empire to save a woman he barely knew.

“Why didn't you just let her kill me?” Amelia asked quietly, her voice echoing off the stone walls. “If I die, you get the money. You keep your empire. Why are you doing this?”

Lorenzo stopped on the stairs. He turned around, the flashlight beam pointing at the ground, casting his face in deep shadows. He looked at her, truly looked at her, his eyes tracing the delicate features of her face.

“Because I am not my father,” Lorenzo said, his voice rough with suppressed emotion. “He broke your mother's heart to keep his crown. I knew who you were the day you applied for the maid position. I recognized your face. I hired you to keep you close, to keep you hidden from Vivienne until I could figure out how to transfer the trust safely.”

Amelia stared at him, stunned. “You knew?”

May you like

“I have been watching over you for five years, Amelia,” Lorenzo confessed, the frighteningly calm mafia boss suddenly looking incredibly vulnerable. “Every time you couldn't make rent, every time an envelope of cash mysteriously showed up in your mailbox. That was me. You belong to this family. You belong to me. And I will burn this entire estate to the ground before I let anyone take you away.”

He didn't wait for her to respond. He turned and continued down the stairs. Amelia followed, her mind reeling, realizing that the terrifying monster of the Vescari family had been her unseen guardian angel her entire life.
