Chapter 7 - The safehouse in the pines

The ensuing standoff in the garage ended without a single shot fired. Faced with overwhelming odds and the realization that Lorenzo commanded total loyalty, Vivienne’s hired guns dropped their weapons and surrendered. Vivienne was seized, screaming furious threats as Lorenzo’s men dragged her away to be held in the estate’s holding cells until the family council could deal with her treason.

Despite the victory, the mansion was no longer safe. The secret of Amelia’s identity was out.

Within an hour, Lorenzo and Amelia were speeding out of the city in a black, armored SUV, driving deep into the dense, pine-covered mountains north of the estate. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a bright, cinematic golden hue over the rolling hills.

Amelia sat in the passenger seat, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket Lorenzo had given her. She still wore her black-and-white maid uniform, a stark reminder of the life she had just left behind. Lorenzo drove in silence, his massive hands gripping the steering wheel, his eyes scanning the empty mountain road with sharp vigilance.

They arrived at a secluded, ultra-luxurious cabin built into the side of a cliff, overlooking a vast, pristine lake. It was a safehouse, heavily fortified but beautiful, featuring massive windows and a roaring stone fireplace that Lorenzo immediately lit.

Amelia stood by the fire, shivering despite the warmth. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind a profound exhaustion and a desperate need for answers.

Lorenzo walked into the living room holding two mugs of hot coffee. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing against hers. The brief contact sent a jolt of warmth through her fair skin.

“Drink,” Lorenzo commanded softly. “You need the sugar.”

Amelia took a sip, looking up at the towering mafia boss. He had stripped off his tuxedo jacket and tie, wearing only the white dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal his muscular forearms.

“What happens now?” Amelia asked, her voice quiet. “Vivienne said the council voted. Do they want me dead?”

Lorenzo sat in a leather armchair across from her, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “The council wants stability. My father’s trust cannot be broken, but it requires a physical key to activate the final transfer of power at the bank. Without that key, the assets remain frozen, and the family is vulnerable. That is why Vivienne attacked tonight. She was looking for the key.”

Amelia frowned. “I don't have a key. My mother left me nothing but medical bills and a silver locket.”

Lorenzo’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. “A silver locket?”

Amelia reached under the collar of her maid uniform, pulling out a cheap, tarnished silver locket on a delicate chain. “She told me never to take it off. She said it was the only thing my father ever gave her.”

Lorenzo stood up instantly, crossing the space between them. He reached out, his large fingers gently touching the locket resting against her chest. He unclasped the latch. Inside was a tiny, faded picture of Amelia as a baby.

Lorenzo pulled a small pocket knife from his trousers and carefully pried the picture loose. Underneath the photo, hidden in a microscopic hollow of the metal, was a tiny, perfectly carved piece of platinum with intricate digital engravings.

It was a bank vault micro-key.

“She didn't leave you nothing, Amelia,” Lorenzo whispered, staring at the key in awe. “She left you the keys to the kingdom.”
