Chapter 8 - The vault of lies

The private bank in the city center was a fortress of marble and steel, catering exclusively to billionaires, royalty, and the ghosts of the criminal underworld. Lorenzo and Amelia walked through the pristine glass doors just as the clock struck noon on her thirty-second birthday.
Amelia was no longer dressed as a maid. Lorenzo had arranged for a beautiful, tailored navy-blue pantsuit to be brought to the safehouse. She looked every inch the powerful, elegant heir to a dynasty, her fair skin glowing, her dark hair falling perfectly over her shoulders. Beside her, Lorenzo was back in a bespoke dark suit, projecting an aura of lethal authority that made the bank managers clear the floor immediately.
They were escorted deep underground, past heavily armed guards and massive biometric scanners, to a private vault room lit by bright, clinical lights.
The bank manager bowed slightly and left them alone in front of Vault 704.
Amelia looked at Lorenzo. He gave her a reassuring nod. With trembling fingers, she inserted the tiny platinum micro-key into the electronic lock. The massive steel door clicked, hissed, and slowly swung open.
Inside the safety deposit box rested a stack of perfectly preserved legal documents, a velvet jewelry box, and a small, modern digital recorder.
Amelia reached for the recorder first. She pressed play. The quiet hum of the vault was broken by the deep, raspy voice of Lorenzo’s father.
“Amelia. If you are hearing this, Lorenzo has kept you safe, as he promised me he would. The documents in this box legally transfer the Vescari empire to your name. But there is a truth you both must hear, a truth I hid to protect the family from tearing itself apart.”
Lorenzo stood perfectly still, his jaw tight.
“Vivienne believed I hid the piano to conceal a secret stash of wealth. She was right, but not in the way she thought. The piano was the first piece of furniture Evelyn and I ever bought together. It was hollowed out, designed to hold the Vescari diamond—the central asset that legitimizes our family’s seat on the high council. But I didn't hide the diamond in the piano to keep it from Vivienne.”
Amelia looked at Lorenzo, her eyes wide.
“I sold the real diamond thirty years ago to fund the blind trust for you, Amelia. I replaced it with a flawless fake. For three decades, the council has worshipped a piece of cut glass. If Vivienne tries to seize power using the diamond, let her. She will hang herself with her own greed. Take your rightful place, Amelia. Lorenzo… protect her. She is the only light left in our dark world.”
The recording clicked off.
Amelia gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. The entire foundation of the Vescari empire was built on a lie. If the council knew the diamond was a fake, the family would lose their seat, their power, and their lives.
Lorenzo let out a low, dark chuckle that sent shivers down Amelia’s spine.
“He played us all,” Lorenzo said, looking at the velvet box. He reached in and opened it. Inside was a simple, breathtakingly beautiful diamond engagement ring. It wasn't the Vescari diamond. It was Evelyn’s ring.
“Lorenzo,” Amelia whispered. “If Vivienne escapes the holding cells… if she goes to the piano…”

“She already did,” Lorenzo said, his voice turning cold and sharp. “My men reported in five minutes ago. Vivienne broke out of the cells with the help of a rogue council member. She is at the mansion right now. She has dismantled the piano.”
Lorenzo turned to Amelia, his eyes burning with a fierce, protective fire. “She thinks she has the crown jewel. She is calling an emergency summit at the estate tonight to overthrow me. It's time to go home, Amelia. It's time to end this.”
