Chapter 9 - The diamond and the deception

The Vescari estate was ablaze with light, a bright cinematic spectacle cutting through the dark night. Black SUVs lined the circular driveway, dropping off the most powerful, dangerous men in the country—the members of the high syndicate council. They had come at Vivienne’s desperate summons, promised a revelation that would shatter Lorenzo’s rule forever.

Inside the grand ballroom, the scene from the previous night had been entirely swept away. The broken glass and ruined cakes were gone. In the center of the room stood the antique grand piano, its heavy mahogany casing violently cracked open with a crowbar, its internal mechanisms exposed and ruined.

Standing triumphantly in front of the destroyed instrument was Vivienne. She wore a sleek, predatory black gown, her blond hair perfectly styled. In her hand, held high for the council members to see, was a massive, glittering gemstone. The fake Vescari diamond.

“Lorenzo Vescari is a fraud!” Vivienne announced, her voice echoing off the marble walls, dripping with arrogant confidence. “He conspired to give our family’s wealth to a servant! A common maid! But the true power, the symbol of the council’s authority, is right here. By right of possession and bloodline betrayal, I claim leadership of the Vescari family!”

The old, scarred men of the council murmured among themselves, eyeing the massive stone with reverent greed.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open. The room fell instantly silent.

Lorenzo Vescari walked in, stepping with the slow, terrifying confidence of an apex predator. He wore his midnight-black tuxedo, looking every inch the untouchable king they all feared. But it was the woman walking beside him that drew every eye in the room.

Amelia walked perfectly in step with Lorenzo. She wore the sharp navy-blue suit, her head held high, radiating a quiet, absolute power that commanded respect. She was no longer the frightened maid; she was the ghost of Evelyn Reed, reborn to claim her throne.

“You claim leadership over a throne built on glass, Vivienne,” Lorenzo said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the large room.

Vivienne sneered, gripping the diamond tightly. “You’re finished, Lorenzo. The council is here. The diamond is mine. You have nothing.”

Lorenzo didn't look at her. He turned to the oldest council member, a man named Don Salvo.

“Salvo, you are an expert in precious stones, are you not?” Lorenzo asked calmly.

The old man nodded slowly, his eyes darting between Lorenzo and Vivienne.

“Check the stone,” Lorenzo commanded, stepping aside.

Vivienne hesitated, a flicker of panic crossing her elegant features, but she had no choice. She reluctantly handed the massive diamond to Don Salvo. The old man pulled a jeweler's loupe from his pocket, holding the stone up to the bright chandelier light.

The ballroom was dead silent. Seconds ticked by like hours.

Don Salvo lowered the loupe. He looked at Vivienne, an expression of profound disgust twisting his scarred face. He casually tossed the massive stone onto the polished marble floor. It didn't shatter, but the dull clatter of it hitting the stone revealed its true weight.

“It’s flawless glass,” Don Salvo said, his voice thick with contempt. “A master forgery, but worth absolutely nothing. You brought us here for a parlor trick, Vivienne.”

Vivienne’s face drained of all color. She stared at the fake diamond on the floor, her mind fracturing. “No… no, that’s impossible. It was inside the piano! It’s the family treasure!”

“The family treasure,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble as he stepped toward Amelia, gently taking her hand in front of the entire council, “was never a stone. It was a bloodline. It was a trust. And as of noon today, that trust legally belongs to Amelia.”
