Chapter 1 - the breath between heartbeats

The private intensive care suite on the top floor of St. Jude Memorial was bathed in the warm, sterile glow of amber-tinted halogen lamps and the rhythmic pulse of digital vitals. Rain beat softly against the reinforced glass windows overlooking the glittering skyline of Chicago, but inside room four-twelve, the world was completely still.

Dominic Moretti lay motionless beneath the crisp white linens.

Even unconscious, his presence dominated the expansive suite. At forty-two, the head of the Moretti family was built like sculpted granite, his broad shoulders and muscular chest rising and falling in slow, measured intervals beneath light clinical bandages. Thick dark hair fell slightly across his brow, framing a chiseled jaw shadowed with days of dark stubble. Intricate black ink climbed his neck, winding down his forearms and over the knuckles resting limp against the mattress.

Beside him stood Grace Bennett.

Her dark brown hair was swept into a loose, exhausted bun at the nape of her neck, loose tendrils framing her fair, rosy cheeks. Her clean white uniform with sharp dark navy piping was immaculate, despite her having worked sixteen straight hours through the most terrifying trauma surgery of the year. Grace was thirty-one, quiet, exceptionally observant, and carrying the exhaustion of a woman who had physically held this man’s life in her hands when his heartbeat had nearly flatlined on the operating table.

Grace leaned forward, gently calibrating the intravenous drip on Dominic’s medical monitor. Her fingers were steady, but her mind was racing. Dominic was not just another patient. The entire hospital wing was locked down, manned by private security teams in tailored suits.

The heavy oak doors swung open without a knock.

Grace turned, her fingers resting lightly against the IV line.

Vanessa Bellini stepped into the room.

She was thirty-seven, effortlessly elegant, and radiating wealth and control. She wore a tailored ivory designer pantsuit that accentuated her lithe frame, paired with sparkling diamond drop earrings and a delicate tennis necklace that caught the room’s golden light. Her manicured hands rested over a structured leather clutch, and her cool blue eyes locked onto Grace with immediate, razor-sharp hostility.

Behind Vanessa stood Marco Russo, Dominic’s formidable security chief, his broad-shouldered frame clad entirely in black, eyes scanning every corner with watchful tension, followed by two armed guards.

Vanessa did not look at Dominic. Her eyes stayed glued to Grace.

Without uttering a single word, Vanessa raised a polished hand and flicked her wrist toward the hallway.

The gesture was dismissive, cruel, and absolute.

One of the security guards immediately stepped forward, his heavy hand closing firmly around Grace’s slender wrist to pull her away from the bedside monitor.

Grace pulled back slightly in resistance, but the guard’s grip tightened.

In that exact fraction of a second, the steady beep of the heart monitor spiked.

Dominic’s heavy eyelashes fluttered. His piercing eyes slowly opened.

The haze of deep sedation vanished the instant his gaze landed on the guard gripping Grace’s wrist.

"Grace."

His voice was raw, weakened by days of unconsciousness, yet laced with an undeniable, terrifying authority that instantly paralyzed the entire room.

Every single person froze.

The guard let go of Grace’s wrist as if he had just touched white-hot iron. He took two stumbling steps back, lowering his head.

Dominic shifted against the pillows, a brief tightening around his eyes revealing the sharp discomfort of his recovering frame. Slowly, deliberately, he lifted his heavy, tattooed right hand toward Grace.

Grace hesitated for only a second before crossing the short distance between them. She placed her soft, warm hand into his large, calloused palm.

Dominic’s fingers closed around hers with astonishing firmness.

Vanessa watched their joined hands, her lips parting in stunned disbelief. A sharp flare of crimson flushed across her pale, aristocratic neck.

"Come here," Dominic murmured quietly, his eyes never leaving Grace’s face.

Grace stepped closer to the edge of the bed, feeling the sudden warmth of his grip grounding her against the hostility suffocating the room.

Vanessa took two sharp steps forward, the clicking of her designer heels loud against the hardwood flooring. Her composure cracked, her voice trembling with barely concealed jealousy and fear.

"She’s only your nurse, Dominic," Vanessa said, forcing a brittle, condescending smile. "You need your family now. She doesn't belong here."

Dominic turned his head toward Vanessa. His gaze was glacial, completely stripped of warmth.

"Then why is everyone afraid of what she knows?" he asked, his voice low, steady, and chilling.

The guards exchanged uneasy glances. Marco Russo shifted his weight, his dark eyes narrowing as he observed his boss.

Grace caught her breath. Before she could process his words, movement near the open doorway drew her attention.

Standing just beyond the threshold was a little boy.

He was six years old, slight and pale, with a tousled mop of dark hair and large, haunting gray-blue eyes. He wore oversized light-blue hospital pajamas. In his small, trembling hands, he clutched a broken silver chain with an antique black cross dangling from the shattered link.

Dominic followed Grace’s gaze to the door. The moment his eyes landed on the child, his grip on Grace’s hand tightened so hard her knuckles turned white.

Vanessa turned toward the door as well.

The instant she saw the boy standing there holding the broken cross, the color drained completely from her face. Her breath hitched in her throat, leaving her as pale as chalk.

The room fell into an agonizing silence.

The little boy took a hesitant step into the suite, slowly lifting the broken silver chain into the air as if searching for someone who recognized it.

Dominic stared at the pendant, his jaw tightening into iron. He recognized that black cross.

Then Grace’s eyes drifted toward Vanessa.

Subconsciously, without realizing what she was doing, Vanessa’s hand had darted to the lapel of her ivory jacket. Her manicured fingers were clutching something hidden just beneath the silk lining of her collar.

Grace’s breath caught. Through the parted lapel of Vanessa’s jacket, Grace caught the unmistakable glint of an identical silver chain, holding an identical black cross.

Grace looked down at the little boy’s chain. Then back up at Vanessa’s chest.

Dominic noticed the shift in Grace’s eyes. Slowly, his piercing stare moved from Grace to Vanessa’s right hand.

Realizing what she was doing, Vanessa instantly jerked her jacket shut, flattening her palm across her chest to hide the necklace beneath the ivory fabric.

Dominic’s expression went completely, dangerously still.
