Chapter 6 - the lakeside sanctuary

The vehicle sped north along Lake Shore Drive, the dark waters of Lake Michigan churning under the midnight rain to their right.

The safehouse was not a dingy basement or a hidden bunker; it was a sprawling, gated modernist estate situated on a secluded bluff overlooking the lake, surrounded by towering pines and secured with high-voltage fencing and biometric gates.

As the iron gates rolled open, the SUV swept up the long gravel driveway, parking under a brightly lit stone portico.

Four heavily armed security personnel, dressed in civilian suits, stood at attention as the car came to a stop.

Dominic stepped out first, offering his hand to Grace.

She took it, carrying Leo in her other arm. Grace felt physically drained, her limbs trembling from the sudden crash of adrenaline. Dominic noticed. Without a word, he gently took Leo from her arms, cradling the sleeping boy against his broad chest with one arm, while using his other hand to support Grace’s waist as they walked into the warm foyer.

The interior was stunning—vaulted ceilings of pale oak, heated limestone floors, and massive glass walls framing the stormy lake. A roaring fire was already crackling in the double-sided stone fireplace.

"Marco," Dominic said, setting Leo gently onto an expansive velvet sofa in front of the fire. "Have Dr. Hayes brought in to run a full diagnostic on Leo tomorrow morning. Check his blood work, ensure there's no trauma we missed."

"Right away, boss," Marco said. "And the Bellini situation?"

"Assemble the capos for nine in the morning," Dominic’s voice turned to steel. "At the downtown estate. Vanessa thinks she's running the syndicate while I'm recovering. Let her think that for five more hours."

Marco nodded and disappeared down the hall to coordinate the operations.

Grace stood near the fireplace, warming her cold hands. She looked down at her white uniform, wrinkled and marked with the dust of the hospital stairwell. She felt entirely out of place in this palace of stone and shadows.

A soft, warm wool blanket was placed over her shoulders.

Grace looked up. Dominic was standing right behind her, his jacket off, his black shirt open at the collar to reveal the edge of his chest tattoos.

"You're shivering," he said softly.

"I’m just... processing," Grace murmured, pulling the blanket around herself. "Five hours ago, my biggest concern was finishing my chart notes before morning shift handover. Now I'm in a fortified mansion with a mafia don and an orphan who holds the keys to an empire."

Dominic leaned against the stone mantelpiece, watching her with an intensity that made her breath catch. "You held my heart in your hands, Grace. Literally. When they brought me in, the doctors told Marco I was gone. They said my vitals had collapsed."

Grace looked at the dancing flames. "You had a severe pericardial tamponade. Blood was compressing your heart muscle. The surgeon was running late from another trauma. I couldn't wait for him. I took the pericardiocentesis needle and relieved the pressure myself."

"You broke hospital protocol," Dominic noted, a soft smile touching his lips. "You risked your medical license to save a stranger."

"I saw a man dying," Grace said simply, looking directly into his dark eyes. "I don't look at names or bank accounts, Dominic. I look at lives."

Dominic stepped closer to her, his large frame blocking the light of the fire, enveloping her in his presence. "That makes you the rarest thing in my world, Grace Bennett. Someone who acts without an angle."

His hand came up, his warm, calloused fingers gently tucking a stray lock of dark brown hair behind her ear. His touch lingered along the curve of her jaw, making Grace’s heart flutter dangerously.

"Vanessa lived with me for four years," Dominic murmured, his voice low and intimate. "Every touch, every word, every smile was an investment. A calculation to see how much power she could leverage. She wore Julian's cross like a trophy of a victory she hadn't even earned yet."

"Why did she have the twin cross?" Grace asked quietly, leaning ever so slightly into his warm touch before she could stop herself.

Dominic’s jaw tightened. "Because Julian wasn't ambushed by strangers. Five years ago, Julian went to meet a contact at a waterfront warehouse to finalize peace talks with the Falcones. Vanessa was the one who scheduled that meeting. She told Julian the Falcones wanted to negotiate."

Grace gasped softly. "She lured him there."

"And the cross..." Dominic continued, looking down at his palm where the broken pendant lay, "Julian had taken it off to give to the mother of his child as a promise. Vanessa must have intercepted it from the safe before Julian left. She kept it as a token of her secret alliance with the rival bosses. An insurance policy."

"And tonight, Leo brought it back into the light," Grace said.

"Leo is Julian's blood," Dominic said fiercely. "And as long as I draw breath, no one will touch him. And no one will touch you."

Grace felt a warm, undeniable pull toward this dangerous, complicated man. He was feared by an entire city, yet in this quiet room, standing beside a sleeping child, he was fiercely protective, honorable in his own dark way.

"You need to rest your ribs, Dominic," Grace whispered, her voice gentle, full of clinical concern that was fast turning personal. "You exerted yourself on those stairs."

Dominic looked down at her lips, then back into her eyes.

"I'll rest," he murmured, his thumb brushing lightly across her bottom lip, sending a jolt of electricity straight to her core. "When I know you're safe. The guest suite is through the double doors down the hall. Everything you need is there."

Grace nodded, her voice catching in her throat. "Thank you, Dominic."

As she turned to pick up Leo, Dominic stopped her, his hands gently lifting the boy himself. "I'll carry him. Go."

Together, they walked down the quiet corridor of the sanctuary, a family born out of chaos, stepping into the gathering storm.
