Chapter 7 - the gathering storm

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan in shades of cold slate and rose gold.

Grace woke up in the expansive guest room, wrapped in silk sheets. Sunlight was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the tranquil beauty of the private estate. For a second, she forgot where she was—until she noticed the fresh, elegant clothes laid out on the chaise lounge.

A soft, ivory cashmere sweater, tailored dark trousers, and low leather boots, all brand new with the tags removed. Beside them sat a cup of steaming black coffee and a small handwritten note on heavy cream cardstock.

*Wear these. Breakfast is downstairs. — D.*

Grace smiled faintly, the elegant script matching the quiet authority of Dominic Moretti.

After showering and changing, she made her way down the grand floating staircase. The sound of cheerful laughter stopped her in her tracks.

In the sunlit kitchen, Dominic was sitting at the marble breakfast bar. He was dressed in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit, his hair neatly combed back, looking every bit the untouchable kingpin. But sitting beside him on a high stool was little Leo, eating a bowl of fresh berries and pancakes, giggling as Dominic playfully stole a strawberry from his plate.

Grace paused at the entryway, her heart swelling at the sight.

Dominic looked up, his dark eyes instantly locking onto hers. The fierce, cold expression he usually wore melted into something undeniably warm.

"Good morning, Grace," he said, his voice smooth and deep.

Leo turned around, his little face lighting up with a bright smile. "Grace!" he chirped, speaking for the very first time since the attack.

Grace gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth. "Leo! You're talking!"

She hurried over, kneeling beside the boy’s stool. Leo reached out and hugged her neck with sticky pancake fingers. "Uncle Dom made pancakes," the boy announced proudly.

Grace looked over Leo’s shoulder at Dominic, her eyebrows raised in amused disbelief. "Uncle Dom makes pancakes?"

Dominic cleared his throat, a hint of rosy color touching his sharp cheekbones. "I had the chef prepare them. I simply... arranged them on the plate."

"A true culinary master," Grace teased, laughing softly. It was the first time she had laughed in days, and the sound seemed to echo through the kitchen like pure sunlight.

Dominic watched her laugh, his eyes darkening with a quiet, intense longing. "The clothes fit you well."

"Thank you," Grace said, standing up and smoothing the cashmere sweater. "It’s a bit different from hospital scrubs."

Before Dominic could respond, the heavy glass doors to the terrace opened.

Marco Russo walked in, carrying a leather dossier. His expression was dead serious. He stopped when he saw the warm scene, waiting patiently by the threshold.

Dominic’s demeanor shifted back to business in a fraction of a second. He patted Leo’s shoulder. "Leo, go with Maria to the media room. She has cartoons set up for you."

A kind, middle-aged housekeeper stepped forward and took Leo’s hand, leading him out with a warm smile.

Dominic turned to Marco. "Report."

"The capos have all arrived at the Michigan Avenue penthouse," Marco said, handing Dominic the file. "Vanessa is already holding court. She has announced to the high council that you are in an irreversible coma and that she is assuming temporary control under the emergency protocol."

Grace felt a chill run down her spine. "She thinks you're incapacitated?"

"She thinks her hitmen finished the job at St. Jude," Marco explained. "We had the hospital release a media blackout at four this morning. As far as the Bellinis know, room four-twelve was evacuated following a tragic code blue."

Dominic opened the dossier, scanning the signed documents with a cold, predatory smile. "She brought the syndicate’s bankers to the meeting. She wants to liquidate the offshore holdings before the week is out."

"She’s walking right into the trap, boss," Marco said.

"What are you going to do?" Grace asked, stepping closer to Dominic. "Dominic, you can't just walk in there with guns blazing. There are laws—"

Dominic closed the file with a sharp snap and looked down at Grace.

"In my world, Grace, the law is what the head of the table decides," he said softly, reaching out to cup her face in his large, warm hand. "Vanessa tried to murder a child. She tried to execute you. She betrayed the memory of my brother. This isn't a business meeting. This is a reckoning."

"I'm coming with you," Grace stated without hesitation.

Dominic’s jaw tightened. "No. You stay here where it's safe."

"She accused me of being nothing more than a nurse who knows too much," Grace said, her chin lifting with fiery determination. "She wants to convince your council that Leo doesn't exist and that I was a pawn. I have the medical logs from the night you arrived. I have the chain of custody for the items found on Julian's son."

Dominic stared at her, seeing the fierce, unyielding courage in her clear eyes. For a man who had spent his entire life surrounded by men who bowed in fear and women who smiled for profit, Grace Bennett was a revelation.

"You don't back down, do you?" Dominic murmured, a trace of pride in his deep voice.

"Not when innocent lives are on the line," Grace replied.

Dominic looked at Marco. "Prep the convoy. The lady is riding with me."
