Chapter 5 - through the dark corridors

The emergency backup generators kicked on five seconds later, casting the suite in an eerie, low-voltage amber glow.
Marco’s radio crackled with static. A frantic voice broke through the channel: *"Chief, south wing service door breached. Two sentries down. They’re using suppressors. They’re on the freight lift."*
"Move," Dominic commanded.
Marco drew a sleek matte-black handgun from his shoulder holster, chambering a round with a crisp, metallic snap. He stepped into the hallway first, clearing the corridor with practiced efficiency.
Dominic placed his hand on the small of Grace’s back, guiding her forward as she carried Leo. Despite his recent surgery, Dominic moved with predatory speed, his senses razor-sharp. He didn't show a single ounce of pain, though Grace could see the bead of sweat forming at his temple from the sheer exertion of resisting his injuries.
They moved down the north emergency stairwell, avoiding the main elevators. The concrete walls echoed with the distant hum of ventilation units.
"They cut the power to the primary elevators to funnel us to the stairs," Dominic whispered close to Grace’s ear, his breath warm against her temple. "Stay behind me. If anything happens, you take Leo and run through the laundry chute on sub-level one. Marco will cover you."
"I'm not leaving you to bleed out on a concrete floor, Dominic," Grace whispered back, her tone fiercely defiant.
Dominic glanced back at her, a rare, genuine flash of admiration in his dark eyes. "You really are something else, nurse."
They reached the second-floor landing when the heavy steel door below them creaked open.
Two men in black tactical gear and combat vests stepped onto the stairs, suppressed submachine guns raised. They spotted Dominic instantly.
Before they could bring their weapons to bear, Dominic surged forward with explosive speed. He grabbed the barrel of the first man’s weapon, forcing it downward into the concrete wall just as three muffled rounds tore into the cement. Dominic drove his elbow violently into the operative’s jaw, the crack of bone audible in the enclosed space. The man collapsed instantly.
The second operative swung his weapon toward Grace and the child.
"Down!" Dominic roared.
Grace dropped to her knees on the landing, shielding Leo with her entire body. Leo didn't scream; he buried his face deeper into Grace’s neck, his small fingers digging into her white uniform.
A sharp, deafening double-tap echoed through the stairwell.
Marco had fired from above. The second operative dropped against the handrail, neutralized without a single drop of graphic carnage, completely immobilized.
Dominic picked up the first man's fallen communication radio, ripping the earpiece out. He leaned against the concrete wall for a split second, pressing his palm against his bandaged ribs. His breath came hard, his rosy, fair complexion momentarily pale from the shock of the physical exertion.
Grace was on her feet instantly, placing a stabilizing hand on his chest. "Dominic! Stop! Look at me."
She pulled back his shirt slightly. The white gauze beneath was clean—the sutures had held, but the bruising was severe.
"I'm fine," Dominic grunted, his hand coming up to cover hers against his chest. His fingers twined with hers for a fleeting second, his heart thumping violently beneath her palm. "Ambulance bay is thirty feet away. Move."
They burst through the heavy crash-bar doors into the subterranean ambulance bay.
Waiting under the bright halogen work lights was a reinforced black SUV, its engine idling in a low, thunderous purr. A driver in a suit sat behind the wheel, the doors already unlocked.
Marco pulled open the heavy rear door. "Get in! Go, go!"
Grace slid onto the plush leather backseat with Leo, pulling the boy onto her lap. Dominic climbed in right behind her, his large frame filling the space, and slammed the reinforced door shut.
Marco hopped into the front passenger seat. "Hit the gate! Now!"
The SUV roared to life, tires screeching against the painted concrete as the driver slammed the accelerator. The vehicle shot out of the underground bay, bursting through the plastic rain flaps and tearing out onto the wet Chicago pavement just as the flashing red and blue lights of distant sirens began to echo across the city skyline.
Inside the quiet, leather-lined cabin of the SUV, Leo finally pulled his face away from Grace’s neck.
He looked at Dominic.
Then, with his small, trembling hand, Leo reached out and placed the broken silver chain into Dominic’s open palm.
Dominic stared at the small black cross. His fingers closed around it, his knuckles whitening with a quiet, terrifying resolve.

"It's over now, Leo," Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You're with me."
Dominic looked up at Grace. In the shadows of the speeding vehicle, their eyes met, the unspoken bond forged in the fires of survival locking them together forever.
