Chapter 8 - the court of shadows

The penthouse on Michigan Avenue was the pinnacle of Chicago luxury.
Spanning three floors atop a glass tower, the grand boardroom featured Italian marble, mahogany finishes, and panoramic views of the foggy city below.
Seated around the thirty-foot boardroom table were eight of the most powerful syndicate bosses in the Midwest. Men in bespoke suits with silver hair and cold, calculating eyes.
At the head of the table stood Vanessa Bellini.
She looked radiant, dressed in a sharp black mourning dress accented with a magnificent diamond brooch. But beneath the silk lapel of her designer jacket, the silver chain with the black cross remained, tucked away from sight.
"Gentlemen," Vanessa spoke, her voice steady and laced with dramatic sorrow. "The medical team at St. Jude did everything they could. But Dominic’s injuries were too severe. As his designated fiancée and executive heir, I am prepared to sign the transition accords to ensure our supply lines remain unbroken."
She reached for the gold fountain pen resting on the leather blotter.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom were thrown open with a thunderous crash that rattled the crystal chandeliers.
The armed guards at the entrance didn't even draw their weapons—they immediately backed away, heads bowed in sheer terror.
Dominic Moretti walked in.
He moved with absolute power, his three-piece charcoal suit immaculate, his piercing eyes sweeping over the room like an apex predator returning to his hunting grounds. Beside him walked Grace Bennett, poised, elegant in her ivory sweater and tailored trousers, holding a leather case with calm dignity.
Behind them was Marco Russo, flanked by six armed tactical guards.
The fountain pen slipped from Vanessa’s fingers, clattering loudly against the mahogany table.
Every single boss at the table stood up instantly, their chairs scraping against the floor in unison.
"Dominic..." Vanessa whispered, her face draining of every drop of blood. "You're... you're alive."
"You look disappointed, Vanessa," Dominic said, his deep voice filling every inch of the vast room.
He walked slowly to the head of the table. The council members bowed their heads respectfully as he passed, none of them daring to make eye contact. Dominic stopped directly across from Vanessa, placing his large, tattooed hands flat on the polished wood.
"I hear you were about to sign away my empire," Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
"Dominic, darling!" Vanessa stammered, stepping toward him, her hands trembling. "Thank God! It was a misunderstanding! The news said there was a blackout at the hospital—they said you were gone! I was only trying to protect your legacy from rival factions!"
"Is that why you wired five million dollars to a wet-work team in Miami last night?" Dominic asked, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.
The bosses around the table exchanged sharp, alarmed glances.
"That's a lie!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at Grace. "It's her! She's feeding you lies! She's a nobody, Dominic! A common hospital nurse trying to climb into your bed and steal what we built!"
Grace didn't flinch. She stepped forward, placing the medical dossier flat on the table, opening it with steady hands.
"Miss Bellini," Grace said, her voice clear, professional, and resonant. "At one-thirty-five this morning, you authorized an emergency psychiatric transfer for a six-year-old child admitted under the alias Leo Bennett. You signed the order using Dominic Moretti’s private medical power of attorney without his knowledge."
Grace looked around the table at the gathered syndicate bosses.
"The child you tried to eliminate is Leo Moretti. The biological son of Julian Moretti."
A collective murmur erupted among the council members.
"Julian had no son!" Vanessa screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into hysteria. "He died five years ago! That brat is an imposter!"
"Show them the chain, Vanessa," Dominic commanded.
Vanessa froze.
"Show them the necklace you're hiding beneath your mourning dress," Dominic repeated, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "The one you took the night you sent Julian to the Falcone warehouse."
"No," Vanessa whispered, taking three frantic steps back toward the panoramic windows.
Marco stepped behind her, blocking any escape.
Dominic reached inside his suit pocket and pulled out the broken silver chain with the small black cross. He placed it squarely on the center of the mahogany table.
"Julian's boy had this when I pulled him from the car," Dominic said, looking at his council. "Carved by artisan Matteo in Palermo in 1994. There were only two. My mother gave one to Julian. The second one was locked in our private vault."
Dominic turned his glacial gaze back to Vanessa. "Take it out. Or Marco will cut it from your neck."
Trembling, tears of rage and terror spilling over her mascara, Vanessa reached into her collar with shaking fingers. She pulled out the second silver chain.
The duplicate black cross hung between her fingers, catching the cold morning light.
The eldest boss at the table, a seventy-year-old veteran named Salvatore, leaned forward, his face hardening into disgust. "The sacred bloodline cross. She had it all along."
"You betrayed my brother," Dominic said, every syllable sealing her fate. "You sold my convoy coordinates to the Falcones. And you tried to murder a child and the woman who saved my life."
"Dominic, please!" Vanessa sobbed, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, clawing at his trousers. "I did it for us! Julian was going to ruin everything! He was weak! He was going to split the family! I wanted you to have everything!"
Dominic looked down at her with nothing but cold, absolute revulsion. He stepped back, letting her hands fall to the floor.
"You have nothing," Dominic declared. "Your family assets are seized. Your father’s shipping licenses are revoked. You will be placed on a private transport to an offshore convent in Calabria, where you will spend the rest of your natural life behind stone walls, without a single dollar to your name."
"No! Dominic! Kill me instead! Don't send me there!" Vanessa wailed.

Dominic didn't look at her again. "Marco. Remove her."
Marco grabbed Vanessa by the arms, dragging her screaming from the boardroom as the heavy double doors closed behind her, cutting off the noise forever.
