Chapter 23 - Frost Meridian Without a Queen

Marcelline returned to Frost Meridian’s board eighteen months after probation began.
No chair role.
Independent chair appointed instead.
This angered old family members.
“Frost company needs a Frost at the head.”
Why?
No good answer.
The independent chair, Caroline Weiss, ran an insurance company before retirement.
Boring.
Excellent.
Frost Meridian performed better the next year.
Marcelline remained useful.
Hospitality strategy.
Brand.
Historic properties.
She had genuine skill.
Separating skill from entitlement was important.
One board meeting considered selling a hotel Cecilia loved.
Elsa’s trust committee supported sale.
Marcelline opposed.
For once:
She lost.
No child involved.
No family punishment.
Corporate vote.
She later told Elsa:
“Your trust sold your mother’s hotel.”
Bad phrasing.
Elsa became upset.
Dr. Shaw intervened.
Marcelline apologized.
Again.
Progress not perfection.
The hotel sold because renovation costs exceeded projected value.
Part of proceeds remained invested for Elsa.
Cecilia’s memory did not require preserving inefficient real estate.
That lesson applied to mansions too.
But Kane House survived.
May you like
For now.
