Chapter 7 - The Trustee’s File

The professional trustee was Boston Atlantic Trust.

Old firm.

Boring.

Exactly what Elsa needed.

Its internal notes revealed something uncomfortable.

They had noticed Marcelline’s tone months earlier.

One trust officer wrote:

Ms. Frost increasingly frames discretionary beneficiary requests in relation to Mr. Kane’s cooperation on proposed restructuring.

Another:

Potential conflict between fiduciary decision-making and family governance dispute.

Why had they not removed her sooner?

Trust documents required either court action or co-trustee agreement absent clear misconduct.

They sought legal advice.

They documented.

Eventually supported court intervention.

Slow.

Frustrating.

Proper.

No magical trustee who could snap fingers.

The guardian ad litem for Elsa’s financial interest interviewed me too.

“Do you use Elsa’s trust to pay expenses you could pay yourself?”

“Sometimes where clearly appropriate.”

“What?”

School tuition allocated partly to trust under document.

Certain medical.

Frost-family property expenses.

“Why not pay everything yourself?”

“Because the trust exists for her.”

Good.

Then:

“Do you ever refuse trust money to preserve leverage?”

“No.”

“Have you ever threatened Marcelline financially?”

I thought of one email.

“I told her I would remove Kane capital from a Frost hotel project if she kept blocking Elsa’s art program.”

The guardian stared.

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“My lawyer told me that was retaliatory.”

There.

Another mistake.

Not as bad as my later slap.

Same instinct.

Someone pressures my daughter.

I pressure back using whatever lever is near.

The guardian wrote it.

I did not like that.

Good.

Elsa’s financial world needed adults who did not turn every asset into a weapon.

The court’s final order removed Marcelline and insulated the trust from me too.

I received information as parent where appropriate.

I did not control investments.

I could petition.

Not command.

At first I hated it.

Then realized:

That is protection.

May you like

Even from me.
