Chapter 25 - Marcelline’s Final Apology to Me

She asked for coffee.

Two and a half years after the gala.

Public hotel lobby.

No security table.

I agreed.

She said:

“You still hate me.”

“Yes.”

She almost smiled.

“Fair.”

Then:

“I hated you too.”

“I know.”

“I thought you took Cecilia away from the Frosts.”

“She married me.”

“I know.”

“I did not abduct her.”

“I know.”

Then:

“When she died, I thought Elsa was all I had left of her.”

I said nothing.

“And you kept choosing what was best for Elsa without caring what I needed.”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“That is the part I could never forgive.”

I leaned back.

“Elsa’s needs did outrank yours when the decision was about Elsa.”

Marcelline nodded slowly.

“I know now.”

There.

Then:

“I used the trust because it was the only place you couldn’t overrule me.”

That sentence was honest.

“I liked that.”

“Yes.”

“I told myself it was fiduciary discipline.”

“Sometimes it was.”

She looked surprised.

“Sometimes.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t.”

Then:

“I pushed her because I wanted obedience.”

“Yes.”

“I could have killed her.”

Potentially.

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“And you hit me because you wanted the same thing.”

I almost objected.

Then stopped.

“I wanted submission.”

“Yes.”

“Not the same severity.”

“No.”

“But same impulse.”

She nodded.

That conversation did not create friendship.

It created boundaries with language.

Useful.

Before leaving she said:

“Does Elsa still ask about Cecilia?”

“Yes.”

“Can I send stories?”

“Ask her therapist. Then Elsa.”

She nodded.

No demand.

No family privilege.

May you like

That was change.
