Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of Villa Moretti cast a warm, golden glow across the marble corridor, but Clara Bennett felt only cold dread.
Down on her knees, Clara pressed a clean linen cloth into the Persian rug, desperately soaking up the spilled pomegranate juice. Around her, men in tailored tuxedos and women draped in diamonds whispered behind champagne flutes. The elite of the city had gathered under one roof, and a single mistake by a widowed housekeeper was an unforgivable spectacle.
Standing directly over her was Vivian Romano.
Vivian looked striking in a dramatic crimson silk gown, her diamond earrings catching the light like shards of ice. Her fair face was twisted with disgust.
"Look at you," Vivian hissed, her voice cutting through the soft orchestral music. "Clumsy. Pathetic. You ruin an antique rug and expect everyone to wait on your knees?"
"I apologize, Miss Romano," Clara said softly, keeping her eyes down. Her dark hair was pulled into a neat, simple bun, and her pale gray uniform felt like a prison. "It was an accident. A guest bumped—"
The crack of Vivian’s palm striking Clara’s cheek echoed down the marble hallway.
Clara recoiled, the sting burning across her skin. Gasps rippled through the gathering, but nobody stepped forward. Clara stayed on her knees, her hands trembling against the damp cloth, her heart pounding with humiliation.
"Mommy!"
The high, fierce voice shattered the silence.
Little Emma, just three years old, darted out from the service corridor. Her curly light-brown hair bounced as her bare feet slapped against the cold stone. She wore her faded pale-blue dress, her tiny arms tightly clutching a worn, soft blue plush rabbit.
Emma threw herself in front of Clara, extending her small arms like a shield.
"Don’t you dare order my mommy around!" Emma shouted, glaring up at the woman in red.
Vivian blinked, stunned for a fraction of a second, before her eyes flashed with pure malice. "Whose undisciplined brat is this?"
"Emma, baby, no," Clara gasped, reaching out to pull her daughter back. "Please, step back."
Emma didn’t budge. Her chin trembled, but her blue eyes burned with fierce loyalty.
"My mommy works harder than anyone in this house," Emma declared, her voice ringing clear and steady for every mob boss and socialite in the room to hear.
Vivian sneered, raising her hand again, this time aiming directly at the child. "I will teach you some manners myself."
"Apologize to Mrs. Bennett."
The command was low, quiet, and carried the weight of an executioner's blade.
Vivian froze.
At the far end of the corridor, Alessandro Moretti stepped into view. Tall and broad-shouldered, he wore a custom black suit and crisp black shirt that accentuated his razor-sharp jawline and piercing gray eyes. The entire room went dead silent. Even the waiters stopped breathing.
Alessandro walked forward with slow, controlled authority. He set his wineglass down on a silver tray held by a trembling server without once looking away from his fiancée.
Vivian lowered her hand, her smug confidence unraveling into nervous fluster. "Alessandro... she spilled a drink, and then this child spoke to me with absolute—"
"Apologize," Alessandro repeated. His voice did not rise, but the ice in it made Vivian take half a step back. "Now."
Vivian swallowed hard. Her cheeks flushed bright red under the gaze of twelve rival crime families. She looked down at Clara, her teeth clenched so tightly her jaw trembled.
"I am sorry, Mrs. Bennett," Vivian muttered.
Alessandro didn’t acknowledge Vivian’s retreat. He ignored the stares of Don Ricci and the other bosses watching from the archway. Instead, he knelt down on the marble floor until his eyes were level with Emma’s.
His cold, unreadable expression softened by a fraction. He checked the little girl with a brief, observant glance, ensuring she had not been touched.
Emma tilted her head, studying his sharp face with pure innocence. She lifted the worn blue rabbit and held it out toward his chest.
"Mr. Bunny says you look sad," Emma whispered.
Alessandro’s hand reached out, his long fingers gently touching the rabbit's folded ear to guide it down. But as his thumb brushed the inner seam of the fabric, he felt a raised, coarse texture hidden beneath the thread.
He turned the ear over.
Stitched into the inner blue velvet was a tiny, intricate black symbol: a crowned viper coiled around a dagger.
Alessandro’s face changed in an instant. The faint gentleness vanished, replaced by a deadly, suffocating alert. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle jumped beneath his skin.
He slowly rose to his full height, holding the child’s toy in his hand.
He turned toward the grand hall, fixing his gaze on the twelve crime families. Across the room, Don Ricci lowered his scotch, his watchful eyes widening in unmistakable shock. Security guards along the perimeter instinctively slid their hands inside their jackets.
Vivian looked baffled. Clara went pale as paper.
Alessandro’s voice cut through the silence like a winter gale.
