Chapter 8

The room seemed to collapse into absolute silence.

Clara felt the floor vanish beneath her feet. "What are you talking about? That's insane! Julian was her father!"

Ricci’s smile only widened, showing yellowed, predatory teeth. "Julian Bennett was sterile, my dear. A souvenir from the shrapnel he took in Basra twelve years ago. He couldn't father a child if his life depended on it."

Clara stared at Ricci, terror and nausea churning in her stomach. "You're lying. You're trying to divide us!"

"Check his medical discharge files in the folder Alessandro brought you," Ricci said smoothly, turning his back on Alessandro’s gun as if it were a child's toy. "Page forty-two. Permanent pelvic trauma. Lucas Vance never had a biological child. So whose little girl are you carrying, Clara?"

Alessandro’s jaw was clenched so hard the veins bulged in his neck. He didn't look at Clara. His eyes were locked on Don Ricci's back.

"Marco," Alessandro commanded, his voice trembling with suppressed violence. "Escort Don Ricci and Miss Romano to the east drawing room. Confiscate all communication devices. If either of them attempts to leave the property, shoot them."

"Alessandro, you can't do this to me!" Vivian shrieked as Marco’s men seized her arms, dragging her backward into the hall. "I am a Romano! My father will destroy you for this!"

Don Ricci didn't resist. As Marco pushed him toward the hall, the old man paused, casting one final, mocking glance back into the bedroom.

"The key in the rabbit opens locker 402 at the central rail station, Alessandro," Ricci whispered. "Go see what your brother left behind before I burn it to the ground."

The heavy doors slammed shut. The latch engaged with a heavy, final clunk.

Clara stood frozen by the canopy bed, clutching Emma so tightly the little girl squirmed.

Alessandro slowly turned toward Clara.

The warmth, the protective instinct he had shown an hour ago—all of it had vanished. In its place was a wall of pure, terrifying suspicion.

"Is it true?" Alessandro asked, his voice dead and cold.

"No!" Clara cried out, tears spilling down her cheeks. "I was faithful to Julian! We met in Syracuse, we fell in love, we had Emma! I took the pregnancy test with him holding my hand! He cried when she was born!"

Alessandro stepped toward the desk, grabbed the leather folder, and violently flipped through the classified military files until he reached page forty-two.

He read the lines of black print.

His hand began to shake.

"Julian was sterile, Clara," Alessandro said, his voice dropping to a whisper that cut deeper than a scream. "It's documented here by three separate army surgeons."

Clara shook her head wildly. "No... no, that can't be! Julian never told me! He never said a word!"

"Then whose daughter is she?" Alessandro stepped closer, his piercing gray eyes staring directly into Emma’s face—scrutinizing every line of the toddler’s features.

And for the first time, Clara saw it.

Emma didn't have Julian’s round nose or his dark brown eyes.

Emma had a sharp jawline, high cheekbones, and striking, crystal-gray eyes.
