Chapter 10

Clara ran down the spiral stone staircase, holding Emma tightly against her chest with one arm, Julian’s handgun gripped in the other.
Above her, the concrete vibrated with the thud of explosions and gunfire. The Moretti compound was a fortress, but Don Ricci’s men were attacking with military-grade coordination.
She reached the cold, damp expanse of the underground wine cellar. Rows of oak barrels stretched into the shadows, lit only by dim yellow emergency bulbs.
"Mommy, it’s loud," Emma whimpered, burying her face in Clara’s neck.
"I know, baby. Be as quiet as a mouse, okay? Just like a game."
Clara moved quickly along the south wall, scanning the racks for the release lever Alessandro had described. She found the rusted iron ring behind a 1982 Barolo cask. She pulled it with all her strength.
With a grinding groan, a section of the brick wall swung inward, revealing a narrow, dirt-lined tunnel smelling of river mud and pine.
"Stop right there, Mrs. Bennett."
Clara spun around, raising the gun with both hands.
Stepping out from behind a towering rack of vintage champagne was Vivian Romano.
Vivian had torn the bottom half of her red evening gown to run faster. Her blonde hair was disheveled, her mascara smudged, and in her manicured hand, she held a sleek silver automatic pistol.
"Put the gun down, Clara," Vivian sneered, stepping forward with lethal intent. "You’ve ruined everything. Everything!"
"You betrayed Alessandro!" Clara said, keeping her weapon leveled at Vivian’s chest. "You sold his family out to Ricci!"
"Betrayed him?!" Vivian laughed hysterically, her voice echoing off the brick ceiling. "Alessandro never looked at me! He looked at his empire, his dead brother, his ghost mother—never me! My family gave everything to prop up the Moretti syndicate after the Genoa war, and he treated me like a decorative vase!"
"You brought me here," Clara demanded, taking half a step toward the tunnel entrance. "Why? Why pick me from the agency?"
"Because Ricci told me to!" Vivian snapped. "Ricci knew Lucas Vance had hidden Lorenzo Moretti’s bloodline in Syracuse! Ricci promised me fifty million dollars from the Valenti vaults if I brought the child inside the compound so his men could snatch her during the party!"
Clara’s blood ran cold. "You were going to let them kidnap a three-year-old child?!"
"She’s not a child, she’s leverage!" Vivian screeched, raising her gun directly at Clara’s head. "With Lorenzo’s heir in Ricci’s hands, Alessandro would have signed over every shipping dock in northern Italy! I was going to be the queen of this city! And you... you clumsy little maid... you brought that damned rabbit into the light!"
Vivian squeezed the trigger.

The hammer fell on an empty chamber.
Vivian gasped, staring at her gun in horror. She pulled the slide back frantically, but nothing happened.
"Alessandro cleared all firing pins from the auxiliary weapon lockers an hour ago, Miss Romano," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the shadows.
Marco stepped out from behind a stone pillar, his assault rifle raised.
Without a second thought, Marco fired a non-lethal rubber round directly into Vivian’s shoulder. The impact threw Vivian backward into a wooden crate of wine bottles, sending her crashing to the stone floor in a heap of broken glass and crimson liquid.
Marco didn't even look at her groaning form. He stepped in front of Clara, extending a heavy leather satchel.
"Take this, Mrs. Bennett," Marco said briskly. "Cash, two false passports, and the keys to the armored sedan parked at the boathouse."
"What about Alessandro?" Clara asked, her voice shaking. "Did he go to the station?"
Marco’s face tightened with grim gravity. "Mr. Moretti didn't go to the station. Don Ricci’s convoy never attacked the front gates—that was a distraction. Ricci went straight to locker 402."
"Then where is Alessandro?!"
May you like
"He went to kill Don Ricci," Marco said. "And he ordered me to make sure Lorenzo’s daughter lives to see tomorrow."
