Chapter 14

The heavy steel military chest sat on the concrete floor in the center of the depot, flanked by Marco and four armed Moretti guards. Don Ricci sat twenty feet away, zip-tied to an iron support beam, glaring with venom as a medic roughly bandaged his gunshot wound.
Clara carried Emma back into the open circle. Emma clung to Clara’s neck, her face buried safely away from the sight of the zip-tied men, clutching Mr. Bunny with both hands.
Alessandro knelt before the chest.
He took the brass key *402* from Clara’s hand. He inserted it into the right-hand lock. With his other hand, he slipped his mother’s gold wedding band from his pocket. On the inner circumference of the ring was a tiny, raised notch—a secondary key pattern. He pressed the ring into the circular center recess.
He turned both simultaneously.
A sharp, mechanical *thunk* echoed inside the chest. The heavy steel latches disengaged.
Alessandro slowly lifted the lid.
Inside lay stacks of bearer bonds, worth millions. But resting on top of the bonds were two objects that made the breath catch in Alessandro’s throat.
The first was a leather-bound military dossier marked with the official seal of the United States Department of Defense.
The second was a small, velvet-lined jeweler's box containing an infant's silver hospital bracelet.
Alessandro picked up the bracelet with trembling fingers. Stamped on the silver plate were the words:
*Baby Girl Moretti — Father: Lorenzo Moretti. Mother: Elena Vance.*
Clara gasped, dropping to her knees beside Alessandro. "Elena Vance? That was Julian’s sister. Julian’s younger sister."
Alessandro looked up at Clara, the final pieces of the five-year puzzle snapping into brilliant, blinding clarity.
"Julian... Lucas... didn't steal Lorenzo’s child," Alessandro whispered, his voice cracking with immense relief and sorrow. "Lorenzo married Lucas’s sister. Emma is my niece. She’s Lucas’s niece. She was family to both of us."
Clara covered her mouth, fresh tears spilling over her eyelashes. Julian had never used her. When Julian’s sister Elena died during childbirth in that mountain clinic, Julian had brought the baby to Clara because he loved Clara—and because he knew Clara would be the only mother Emma would ever need.
"And the bonds?" Clara asked, looking into the chest.
Alessandro opened the military dossier. Inside were dozens of wire transfers, bank records, and signed contracts bearing the official signature of Don Ricci and the Romano family patriarch.
"Vivian’s father and Ricci orchestrated the Genoa harbor explosion," Alessandro said, his eyes turning to flint as he looked toward Don Ricci. "They wanted to eliminate Lorenzo because Lorenzo discovered they were embezzling from the international transport union. Lucas took the bonds and the ledger to prove their treason."
Alessandro stood up, holding the dossier. He walked over to Don Ricci.
The old boss didn't look triumphant anymore. He looked broken, defeated, and terrified.
"Your syndicate is finished, Ricci," Alessandro said coldly. "These documents go to the Commission before sunrise. Every family in the territory will know you murdered Lorenzo Moretti for money. You will be stripped of your territories, your assets, and your life."
"Alessandro... wait..." Ricci begged, his voice cracking into a desperate croak. "You don't understand... I wasn't the one who ordered the hit!"
"Save it for the Commission," Alessandro said. He turned to Marco. "Take him to the holding cells beneath the south warehouse. Inform Vivian’s father that his daughter is under house arrest, their family assets are frozen, and the engagement is permanently terminated."
"Yes, boss," Marco said, motioning for his men to drag Ricci away into the waiting vans.
The warehouse fell quiet once more.
Alessandro walked back to Clara and Emma. He knelt down before the little girl.
Emma looked at him with those bright, fearless gray eyes. She reached out her small hand and touched his sharp cheek.
"Mr. Bunny says you don't look sad anymore," Emma whispered.
Alessandro’s lips parted into a genuine, rare smile. He took Emma’s tiny hand and kissed the back of her fingers.
May you like
"Mr. Bunny is right," Alessandro murmured. "You are home now, Emma. Both of you."
