Chapter 13

"You're lying," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "Lucas would never harm my family."
"Then why did he take the child, Alessandro?!" Ricci mocked, gesturing wildly toward the rusted locker. "Why did he run to America?! Why did he keep Elena Moretti’s ring instead of bringing it to you?! Because he was Valenti’s creature from the start!"
Alessandro’s grip on the rifle tightened until his knuckles turned pure white. For a second, a flicker of devastating doubt crossed his eyes.
Clara couldn't stay silent. She knew Julian. She had lived with him for three years. She had watched him hold Emma like she was the most precious miracle in the universe. She had washed the burns on his back—scars from dragging someone out of an inferno, not locking them in.
"He’s lying, Alessandro!"
Clara’s voice cut through the cavernous depot like a silver bell.
Every head snapped toward the oil drums. Ricci’s enforcers raised their weapons toward the shadows.
Alessandro’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "Clara?!"
Clara stepped out from behind the drums. She wasn't carrying Emma—she had hidden the little girl safely inside an empty, clean plastic bin behind the pallets. Clara walked into the open light, holding the brass key *402* high above her head in her right hand, and Julian’s handgun leveled in her left.
"Don't listen to him!" Clara said, her voice ringing clear and fierce across the concrete floor. "Julian wrote journals! Hundreds of pages! He didn't lock Lorenzo in—he was trying to extract him! Ricci’s men were the ones who detonated the docks early because Lorenzo refused to sell the Moretti harbor access to the syndicate!"
Ricci’s face contorted into pure, murderous rage. "Kill her! Get the key!"
Two of Ricci’s gunmen swung their rifles toward Clara.
Alessandro didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger of his automatic rifle, unleashing a deafening, controlled burst that dropped both gunmen before they could align their sights.
Gunfire erupted across the warehouse.
Alessandro sprinted across the open ground, sliding on his knees behind a heavy steel forklift just as bullets chewed into the concrete around him.
"Clara! Get down!" he roared.
Clara dove behind a concrete pillar as sparks flew off the steel beams above her. Ricci’s remaining four guards spread out, laying down suppressive fire, pinning Alessandro behind the forklift.
Ricci, moving with shocking speed for an old man, hobbled toward Clara’s pillar, pulling a heavy snub-nosed revolver from his tuxedo coat.
"Give me the key, girl!" Ricci snarled, rounding the corner of the pillar with his gun raised. "Give it to me, or I’ll find that little bastard in the car and put a bullet through her skull!"
Clara didn't hesitate. She stepped out, Julian’s training flashing in her memory.
*Front sight. Squeeze, don't jerk.*
Clara fired.
The bullet struck Don Ricci’s right shoulder. The impact spun the old boss around, his revolver clattering to the floor. Ricci collapsed against the brick wall with a howl of pain, clutching his bleeding arm.
At the same instant, the roar of multiple engines shattered the night.
Marco’s black tactical vans smashed through the southern depot doors. A dozen Moretti soldiers poured out in full combat gear, surrounding the remaining Ricci gunmen within seconds.
"Drop your weapons! Drop them now!" Marco’s voice boomed over the depot’s intercom.
Outnumbered and outgunned, Ricci’s surviving men threw their rifles onto the floor, raising their hands in surrender.
The echoes of gunfire faded into the steady hiss of rain dripping through the shattered roof.
Alessandro walked out from behind the forklift. He didn't look at Ricci, or his men, or the surrendering guards.
His eyes were locked entirely on Clara.
He walked over to her pillar. Clara stood there, trembling violently, the smoking gun still in her hand.
Alessandro gently reached out, his warm, strong fingers closing over the barrel, easing the weapon from her fingers. With his other hand, he pulled her into his chest.
Clara collapsed against him, her tears finally breaking free against the damp wool of his suit. Alessandro held her tightly, his arm wrapped around her back, his jaw resting against her hair.
"Emma?" Alessandro whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion.
"She’s safe," Clara sobbed. "She’s behind the drums."
Alessandro looked over toward the open locker 402, then down at the brass key still clutched in Clara’s hand.

"It’s time to see what my brother left us," Alessandro said.
