Chapter 5

Alessandro moved like lightning.

Before the echo of the gunshot faded, his hand was at Clara’s waist, shoving her down behind the heavy mahogany desk. In the same fluid motion, a Glock 19 appeared in his right hand from beneath his holster.

Emma woke with a whimper, sitting up in the canopy bed. "Mommy?"

"Stay down, Emma! Cover your ears!" Clara cried, crawling toward the bed.

Alessandro didn't rush to the window. He moved with cold, tactical precision, pressing his back against the wall beside the French doors. Through the shattered glass of the lower terrace, shouting erupted in Italian and English.

"Marco!" Alessandro barked into his lapel microphone.

"Intruder eliminated on the east terrace, boss," Marco’s voice crackled through the radio. "Single shooter. High-caliber rifle. He was aiming for the third-floor master suite."

*He was aiming for Emma's room.*

Clara’s stomach turned to ice. She gathered Emma into her lap behind the footboard of the bed, wrapping her body around the trembling toddler.

Alessandro lowered his weapon, though his stance remained lethal. "Who was the shooter?"

"Ricci's outer ring," Marco responded over the comms. "A mercenary out of Marseilles. But boss... Vivian Romano is in the security room right now. She’s demanding we open the perimeter gates to let her private detail inside."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Lock the gates. If anyone attempts to breach the courtyard, put them down."

He turned back to Clara. His breathing was completely steady, but the darkness in his gray eyes was terrifying.

"Pack Emma's things," he said.

"Where are you taking us?" Clara demanded, her maternal instinct overpowering her fear. "You lied to me! You knew Julian! You knew who he was, and you let me work in this house for six months scrubbing floors while you kept secrets!"

"I didn't hire you, Clara," Alessandro said, his voice dropping low. "Vivian hired you."

The words hit Clara like a physical blow.

"What?"

"Vivian personally selected your resume from the domestic agency three months ago," Alessandro revealed, stepping over the shattered glass by the inner door. "She told me she wanted a quiet, reliable widow with no family connections in the city. I didn't connect your name to Julian until Emma walked into that corridor tonight carrying that rabbit."

Clara’s mind raced. Vivian? Vivian had handpicked her?

"Why would Vivian want Julian’s widow in this house?" Clara asked, her voice trembling.

"Because Vivian’s family was on the verge of bankruptcy before our engagement was announced," Alessandro said bluntly. "And the twenty million dollars Julian allegedly stole five years ago? It belonged to the Romano family’s private slush fund before the Valenti syndicate collapsed."

A neat, tidy explanation. Vivian wanted the money. Vivian brought Clara here to monitor her, suspecting Julian had left the fortune to his wife.

It almost made sense. It felt like the answer.

Except Clara remembered the silver key Vivian had handed Don Ricci by the fountain just an hour ago. If Vivian was desperate to recover her family's stolen money for herself, why would she hand a key to the Romano family’s blood rival?

"You think Vivian is looking for the money," Clara said, standing up and holding Emma tight against her hip.

"I know she is," Alessandro replied coldly.

"Then you’re a fool, Alessandro," Clara said, looking him dead in the eye. "Because an hour ago, your fiancée handed a safe-deposit key to Don Ricci in your private garden."

Alessandro went dead still.

The silence between them grew so heavy Clara could hear the wind howling through the cracked terrace glass.

"Say that again," Alessandro whispered.
