Chapter 14 - My Own Ultimatum

I had one too.

I never said it.

But Octavia felt it.

My internal rule:

Anyone who makes Juniper feel unsafe is gone.

Sounds protective.

Can become authoritarian.

Dr. Reed challenged me.

“What does unsafe mean?”

“Threatened.”

“Emotionally uncomfortable?”

“Not necessarily.”

“Rejected?”

“No.”

“Criticized?”

“No.”

“Embarrassed?”

“Depends.”

Exactly.

I wanted a clean rule because Amelia’s death had taught me life can remove people without warning.

So I compensated.

Control everything else.

Security.

Schools.

Drivers.

Medical specialists.

People around Juniper.

Octavia saw that.

She feared one conflict would remove her.

Then the cake did.

Was she right?

Partly.

But not because Juniper cried.

Because Octavia defended humiliation and had been encouraging the dynamic.

Still, my pattern mattered.

After the engagement, I reviewed household history.

I had ended Juniper’s relationship with one nanny after Juniper said she was:

“mean.”

Investigation showed the nanny was strict about homework, not abusive.

I had overreacted.

She got severance.

Still unfair.

I changed tutors twice based on Juniper discomfort.

Again.

My power made avoidance cheap.

Juniper learned:

Dad removes difficult people.

Not intentionally.

But patterns teach.

So after Hadley, I had to do something harder.

Protect Juniper from actual harm while not teaching that every painful relationship ends by expulsion.

Hadley could someday re-enter her life if both children wanted and professionals agreed.

Octavia?

Different.

Adult partner.

Trust broken.

No obligation to restore.

Juniper needed to see distinctions.

Not everyone disappears because Dad is angry.

Some relationships end because adults choose boundaries.

Some get repaired.

Some remain limited.

May you like

That became part of her recovery.
