Chapter 21 - I Stop Solving Everything

My parenting changed slowly.
Juniper forgot homework at school.
Old me:
Driver retrieves.
New me:
“You’ll tell teacher tomorrow.”
“But I need it.”
“Then consequence.”
She stared as if I had sold her.
Another week:
Friend did not invite her to sleepover.
I wanted to call the parent.
Did not.
Juniper cried.
I sat.
“Do you want me to fix?”
“No.”
Growth.
Mine.
At soccer, coach benched her after she missed practice.
She complained.
I asked:
“Did you miss?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“We had Grandma.”
“Did coach know?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“Still bench.”
“Sounds consistent.”
She hated me.
Healthy.
Protection narrowed to actual safety and fairness.
Not discomfort elimination.
That helped Juniper become stronger in a way Octavia had claimed to want but never achieved through humiliation.
Real resilience grows when a child survives manageable difficulty with support.
Not when adults manufacture pain.

That became one of my most important lessons.
