Chapter 23 - Hadley and Juniper Become Something Else

Not friends.

Not enemies.

By age ten and thirteen, they occasionally occupied the same room.

Celeste remarried.

Family wedding.

Juniper asked:

“Will Hadley be there?”

“Yes.”

“Can I still go?”

“Yes.”

She did.

Hadley did not approach immediately.

Good.

Later they ended up at dessert table.

I watched from too far away.

Juniper noticed.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“Stop.”

I stopped.

Hadley said something.

Juniper laughed.

I never learned what.

No need.

They exchanged social media handles? At ten, perhaps moderated. Better no.

They took one photograph with cousins.

No hug.

No forced reconciliation.

Later Juniper told me:

“She’s less annoying.”

High praise.

Hadley told Celeste:

“Juniper’s funny now.”

Celeste answered:

“She was always funny.”

Good.

No narrative where harmed child needed to change into acceptable person.

Hadley had changed enough to perceive her differently.

Their relationship became distant family acquaintance.

That is a valid ending.

Not every childhood conflict must become friendship.
