Chapter 7 - The Joke Tests

Octavia denied instructing Hadley to push Juniper into the cake.

Good.

We found no evidence she did.

But she admitted something else.

For months she had encouraged what she called:

“joke tests.”

Her term.

Not mine.

What was a joke test?

A small provocation designed to see whether Juniper could:

“handle normal social friction without Matthias intervening.”

Examples:

Hadley switches Juniper’s seat.

Does Matthias fix it?

Hadley teases her stuffed animal.

Does Matthias intervene?

Hadley takes the last dessert she wanted.

Does Matthias make staff bring another?

Hadley refuses to let Juniper choose the movie.

Does Matthias overrule?

This sounds almost ordinary.

Until you realize an adult was measuring the father through the child.

Octavia said:

“I needed to know whether every disagreement would become a referendum on Amelia.”

There.

Amelia.

Dead again inside the argument.

“Did Hadley know these were tests?”

“Not formally.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That Juniper needed thicker skin.”

“Anything else?”

“That she shouldn’t automatically give in because it was Juniper’s house.”

There.

Hadley received permission.

Not:

hurt her.

But:

do not yield.

Test.

Push.

Observe.

Children are excellent at escalating unclear adult permission.

Hadley discovered that making Juniper upset got Octavia’s attention.

Sometimes approval.

Sometimes private laughter.

That social reinforcement mattered.

Dr. Reed asked:

“Did you ever praise Hadley for upsetting Juniper?”

Octavia said:

“No.”

Then corrected herself.

“I may have said she handled Juniper better than adults did.”

There.

“What does that mean?”

“She didn’t indulge her.”

Hadley learned she occupied the role of:

truth teller.

Tough child.

Resilience trainer.

At ten.

No wonder she escalated.

The cake was not ordered.

It was predictable.

That distinction mattered.

Octavia did not plot assault.

She cultivated a dynamic where Hadley believed humiliation was justified as correction.

Then watched.

Did not intervene.

When I reacted, Octavia defended Hadley because condemning the act would also condemn months of her own philosophy.

That was the mechanism.

No financial plot.

No inheritance scheme.

A blended-family power test disguised as childhood teasing.

Simple.

Damaging.

May you like

Plausible.
