Chapter 23 - Nora and Ellie meet again

Their first meeting after the rescue happened four months later.
Therapist’s office.
Nora was eight by then.
Ellie five.
Nora looked healthier.
Not transformed.
Just childlike again.
She held a stuffed fox.
Ellie entered carrying a paper bag.
I panicked when I saw it.
“What’s that?”
“Bread.”
Of course.
The therapist looked at me.
I looked at her.
She shrugged.
Ellie took out two soft dinner rolls.
“Here.”
Nora stared.
Then laughed.
“I have food.”
Ellie looked confused.
“I know.”
“Then why bread?”
“Because.”
Perfect.
Nora took one.
They ate.
No speech about saving.
Then Ellie asked:
“Was wall scary?”
Nora nodded.
“Very.”
“Did bread help?”
“Yes.”
Ellie smiled.
Done.
They played with blocks.
Twenty minutes later they were fighting over a purple marker.
That was reassuring.
Their relationship did not become:
rescuer and rescued.
They became cousins-by-marriage? After divorce, not technically.
Friends through a strange shared history.
Sometimes saw each other with Paige and me coordinating.
No obligation.
No permanent emotional contract.
At six, Ellie stopped asking about Nora every week.
