Chapter 6 - How Nora disappeared

Nora did not vanish from a playground.

There was no masked kidnapping.

On Friday afternoon, Marlene dropped Nora at a child-and-family center for her scheduled visit with Vivian.

Three hours.

Vivian was supposed to return her to the center.

At 4:20, she sent the visit coordinator a message:

Nora is exhausted and fell asleep in the car. Marlene approved direct drop-off at my house for dinner and pickup later.

False.

The coordinator should have verified with Marlene.

She did not.

At 6:05, Marlene arrived at the center.

No Nora.

She called Vivian.

Vivian did not answer.

Then Vivian texted:

Nora asked to stay overnight. Paige previously said family overnights were okay. I’ll bring her tomorrow.

Marlene immediately called the caseworker.

The caseworker called Vivian.

Vivian answered.

She said:

“Nora is safe. She is sleeping. This family is creating drama over nothing.”

The caseworker instructed her to return Nora immediately.

Vivian said she would.

She did not.

Police were contacted.

Why did nobody come to our house that night?

They did.

I was in Boston for work.

Ellie was with our regular sitter until Vivian returned.

At 9:48 p.m., an officer came to the front door.

Vivian showed him an old email from Paige discussing:

“family visits.”

She claimed the matter was a misunderstanding in an informal kinship arrangement.

The officer called an after-hours child-services line.

Information was incomplete.

He documented welfare contact.

Saw Nora?

This part mattered.

No.

Vivian said Nora was asleep and became confrontational when he asked to wake her.

The officer should have insisted on direct visual confirmation given the missing-placement report.

The later review said exactly that.

Instead, believing the dispute was civil and the child was reportedly inside, he left pending morning follow-up.

Institutional failure.

By morning, Vivian had moved Nora into the old service corridor.

Why?

Because the caseworker planned to come to the house.

And because I was coming home that afternoon.

Vivian decided she needed time.

May you like

Time became confinement.
