Chapter 10 - The threshold of a new dawn

The late afternoon sun bathed the Romano estate in brilliant, golden light, casting warm reflections across the restored marble foyer. The broken pieces of the porcelain vase had been cleared away, leaving the floor spotless and gleaming.

Domenico stood on the back patio overlooking the vast green gardens. He wore a simple black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the intricate dark tattoo on his forearm. Little Sofia was sitting on a plush blanket on the grass, wearing her pale pink dress, laughing as she chased a bright yellow butterfly with wobbly steps.

Vance walked out onto the patio, holding a folder of legal documents.

"Everything is finalized, Boss," Vance said, handing him a pen. "The court has officially issued Sofia’s revised birth certificate. Her full name is legally registered as Sofia Elena Romano. You have full, undisputed custody."

Domenico took the pen and signed his name on the final line with a steady, confident stroke. "And the trust funds?"

"Liquidated and transferred into a private trust managed solely by you," Vance replied with a faint smile. "The Morettis have pulled out of New York entirely. Their leadership collapsed after the feds raided their Chicago offices based on Marco’s financial ledgers."

Domenico set the folder down and walked out onto the lawn. He knelt down as Sofia toddled toward him, her tiny white flats pattering against the grass. She fell into his open arms with a delighted giggle.

Domenico picked her up, swinging her gently into the air before holding her close to his chest. Sofia rested her rosy cheek against his shoulder, her tiny hand patting his dark beard.

"We're starting over, sweetheart," Domenico whispered softly, looking out at the endless horizon. "Just you and me."

As he stood there, feeling the warmth of his daughter in his arms, his satellite phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out with one hand and checked the screen.

It was an encrypted message from an unknown number in Europe.

The message contained a single line of text and an image attachment: The Morettis weren't working alone. Check the signature on the original hospital transfer.

Domenico’s sharp eyes narrowed as he tapped the image, revealing a second, hidden seal at the very bottom of the yellowed document—a seal belonging to a syndicate far larger and far more dangerous than anything he had faced in New York.

He looked down at Sofia, who was smiling up at him, entirely safe in his arms. Domenico locked the phone, slipping it back into his pocket with a calm, dangerous smile. The past was finally exposed, and his family was restored. But as he looked out over his empire, he knew that protecting his daughter’s future would require a whole new war.
