Chapter 7 - The enemy at the gates

Ten minutes later, Camilla and Marco were dragged into the study by two heavy guards. Camilla’s cream dress was wrinkled, her eyes bloodshot from crying all night. Marco looked disheveled and defeated, his open-collar shirt torn at the shoulder.
Domenico sat behind his massive mahogany desk, holding Sofia on his lap while she played with a silver pen. The yellowed envelope sat open between them.
"You took my daughter," Domenico said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You lied to me about Elena’s death. You let my wife die in a cold room while you plotted to steal my child for money."
Camilla fell to her knees on the Persian rug. "Domenico, please! It was Marco’s idea! He forged the papers! He threatened to leave me if I didn't go along with it!"
"Liar!" Marco yelled, trying to lunge at her, but a guard shoved him back against the wall. "She was the one who found out about the coma patient at St. Jude's! She wanted the inheritance money just as much as I did!"
"Silence," Domenico said. The single word froze both of them instantly.
Domenico set Sofia down in a playpen in the corner of the room, handing her a soft toy. Then he stood up, walking slowly around the desk until he was inches away from Marco.
"You hit my daughter yesterday," Domenico said, his intense brown eyes narrowing. "You called her a brat. You tried to destroy the paper that would bring her back to me."
"Domenico, we're blood!" Camilla begged, crawling toward his polished shoes. "I'm your sister! You can't execute your own sister!"
"Blood didn't stop you from stealing my child," Domenico replied coldly. "You aren't my sister anymore. You're traitors to the Romano family."
Before anyone could speak, Vance’s radio chirped loudly. "Boss! We have a problem at the main gate! A convoy of six armored vehicles just rammed the entry barrier! They're flying Moretti colors!"
Marco let out a bitter, desperate laugh. "Don't you get it, Domenico? The Morettis don't care who the father is! They know the child is the key to the entire Romano estate! If they take her, they take New York!"

Domenico didn't panic. He reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a second weapon, and racked the slide with a clean, lethal click.
"Vance," Domenico ordered over the comms. "Lock down the inner wing. Keep Sofia in the panic room. I'm going to handle Chicago myself."
